44 Useful Mobile Apps for Social Media Marketers

social media toolsAre you spending more time each day using your smartphone or iPad? Looking for some cool apps to simplify your work and life?

According to a recent study by Flurry, consumers spent 81 minutes per day using mobile apps, compared to 74 minutes of web surfing. Here’s where it gets even more interesting. Social networking is one of two categories that dominate mobile app usage with 32% and games are responsible for 47%.

In Search of Apps

As a social media marketer, you’ll likely want to find apps that will help you keep up with social networking and stay productive while on the go. Many of us hear about apps from friends and colleagues, from articles we read, from searching around on Apple’s App Store to see what’s new and through dedicated search engines such as Chomp.

iphone app

Apps to help manage your time, projects and clients.

If the app is free or relatively inexpensive, then chances are we may be willing to give it a whirl. But with 500,000 apps on the App Store in numerous categories and apps literally being released every day, it’s hard to stay on top of them.

While Apple’s campaign “There’s an app for that” makes many of us now associate the topic of mobile apps with Apple, the reality is that companies such as Android, Nokia, Blackberry, and Palm all sell apps, too.

In this article, I’m going to focus on apps that are compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad (iOS) because those are the devices I’m most familiar with and could access for the purpose of testing.

Useful Apps List

The apps listed below were recommended by a number of businesspeople through a query I posted on HARO, others that people had been talking about in blog posts, on Quora and social networking sites. The apps range in price; many are free and the most expensive one listed is $9.99.

Because new apps are literally released on a daily basis, it’s nearly impossible for this to be a conclusive list. But hopefully it’ll give you ideas about some apps you’d like to try. I hope you’ll take a few moments at the end to share a few of your favorites, too.

Here’s the list in alphabetical order:

This is a great line-up of mobile apps. I use a couple of them like Dropbox, Kindle, Evernote and some others and my learning & efficiency has seen some improvement. This is really great stuff, it gives others an opportunity to filter through apps that don’t help and those that do.

  • deb1221

Thanks but I couldn’t have done it without the great contributions from HARO contributors and mentions on blog posts and Quora. Crowdsourcing at its finest!

I think more and more app developers will soon be developing more cross-platform apps. Let’s hope so anyway! But from what I hear there’s a lot of great things going on with droid apps, too. You have any favorites to recommend? I really enjoyed finding out about Chomp which allows you to search for iOS and Android apps.

  • Sherry Roden

I LOVE dropbox.  I am an android fan and prefer friendcaster for Facebook and tweetcaster for Twitter.  Also use the amazon mp3 app a lot.  Love saving music in the cloud.

  • http://jeffkorhan.com Jeff Korhan

    Solid list Debbie.

However, there is one app missing.  It begins with an S and ends with Examiner. Any plans for one on the horizon Mike?

  • http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/ Michael A. Stelzner

Hey Jeff – No plans.  I don’t see the value in having an app that is essentially just a blog :)

  • http://jeffkorhan.com Jeff Korhan

I’ll agree the value is incremental – and probably zero for those with an iPad.  But it does make the experience a bit easier for those of us using iPhones whose eyes aren’t as young as they used to be. :)

you to use your phone to receive credit card payments. Very cool! The cost to
use the service is about the same as using Paypal. You only pay per

Can I ask the obvious question?  Why is there no mention of Android in the compatibility?

Ok so that was two questions.  Just seems like an oversight when not everyone is Apple based to have it left out completely.

I loved this list!  Great job.  My only suggestion… add prices of apps next time.  I found myself leaving the article to check the app store to see if it was free or not.  [ Luckily, I kept coming back :) ]

  • deb1221

Thanks, Nancy. I had gone back and forth on whether to include the pricing info or not. Now I know!
