Would they like to have access to industry experts who can answer their questions?

Are you aware of the Facebook Friday expert sessions Social Media Examiner has been doing?

Here’s how they work. We bring an expert to our Facebook wall for an hour to answer questions. The expert gets great exposure and the fans get their questions answered.

These sessions are a great way for fans to quickly get the information they need. And you can model this for your business. These open Q&A sessions with industry experts are a great way to encourage engagement with your fans and get your updates to show up more in your fans’ news feeds.

A recent Facebook Friday session on our Facebook page starred Jeff Widman, CEO of BrandGlue . He gave our fans some great advice. Jeff helps businesses make their Facebook marketing sizzle, and of course many of our fans had questions to ask him. And he shared some great nuggets of advice.

This article will show you how we do them by highlighting a recent session.

Find the Right Questions to Ask Fans

It’s so much easier to create a strong Facebook marketing plan when you ask the right questions. Jeff helped Angie Swartz do just that to get more interaction on her page.

Identify Your Needs

If you’ve been on Facebook for any length of time, you know that things change. Facebook can get overwhelming. But a clear understanding of what you need and why you need it will help you to get the most out of Facebook as it continues to evolve.

Jeff helped Mindy get a clear understanding of why she may or may not want to learn FBML, given that Facebook is moving to iFrames in January.

Get a Deeper Understanding

What goes on behind the scenes on Facebook affects how often our updates are seen by our fans. It’s hard to stay up-to-date on everything and it’s always great to hear from the experts on what works best today.

Andy had a question about how often you should post on your Facebook page. It’s interesting to learn how the Facebook algorithm impacts your reach on Facebook.

Get Help in Setting Up Your Social Media Marketing

When you start to set up your social media marketing, you’ll have lots of questions. The Q&A session with Jeff helped Paula get on track to figuring out the best number of pages her company should have.

Get Easy-to-Follow Guidelines

Information overload hits all of us. The Q&A format on Facebook makes it easy to get simple guidelines from social media experts who do this for a living. Naimah got solid advice from Jeff to help her get started on her own.

Get Useful Tips for Your Business

It’s not always obvious to businesses how they can connect with their particular audience on Facebook. Having access to someone with experience across a variety of businesses is useful.

Jeff gave Sheri and Rachel a great way to start promoting their cause on Facebook.

Get Feedback on Things That Appear Complicated

Facebook seems to be the social media platform where people have the most questions on how to set up their profiles and pages and how to use them. And it’s not always easy to find answers to basic questions.

Jeff explained to Lisa the “yes and no” answer to whether she could change the name of her fan page.

Ask All Sorts of Questions

An open Q&A session with a social media expert is a great place to ask all sorts of questions, even the ones that may appear to be too simple.

Jeff explained to Natasha how to change a personal profile page to a fan page.

Get Expert Advice for Your Social Media Tactics

It’s great to seize the opportunity to ask an expert for advice. These questions and answers are useful to everyone.

Here’s one such question from Cathy about dealing with attrition rates on Facebook. Jeff’s answer is useful to all businesses with Facebook pages.

Increase Your Facebook Engagement

Did you notice the stats for the number of impressions in other people’s newsfeeds and feedback percentage in all of the screenshots of the questions shown above?

These statistics are only visible when logged in as an admin for your Facebook page.

They are an indication of your reach and how much engagement you have on Facebook. It’s an easy way to see which updates got the best results on your page.

Now, your updates may not get as many impressions in the newsfeeds of your fans. Social Media Examiner’s Facebook page has been a tremendous success. In only a few months, we’ve reached over 15,000 fans and this shows in the number of impressions and the feedback percentages.

Showing recognition is another way to increase fan engagement.

But you can ask questions and follow the advice shared with the social media experts in our Facebook Friday sessions to improve your social media marketing. With 500 million active users, Facebook represents a huge opportunity for smart businesses.

To take your Facebook marketing to a new level, here are hot Facebook marketing tips direct from the top industry pros. You’ll want to incorporate these priceless ideas.

The best way to get the most from Facebook is to model the best. Find out who’s doing it right and getting real results, and model their strategies. Here are seven ideas from the top authorities in Facebook marketing. Take notes—these tips are too good to pass up!

#1: Bring Facebook to Your Website

“The number-one thing you can do is to bring Facebook onto your own turf. It can be done with a few simple lines of code. This can be one of your most powerful tools for improving your brand awareness,” says Jesse Stay, author of multiple Facebook books, including FBML Essentials.

This page describes the many ways to add Facebook to your website. But the easiest way to add Facebook to your site is to use the Facebook Like Box.

The Facebook Like Box allows you to show your Facebook page feed, the number of fans and pictures of people who are fans (who are also friends of visitors!).

#2: Try Really Inexpensive Facebook Ads

“The best ‘bang for the buck’ in Internet marketing today is Facebook advertising. The targeting options are limitless and surprisingly inexpensive for businesses of all sizes. Facebook advertising can help marketers of all kinds get insights into how different demographic groups respond—and for a fraction of the cost of other alternatives,” said Chris Treadaway, co-author of Facebook Marketing: An Hour a Day.

Setting up an ad on Facebook is super-easy. Just go to the Facebook Ads section and click the “Create an Ad” button. Then simply set up your ad.

#3: Leverage Friends of Connections

Once you have created your Facebook ad, here’s a little-known tip that can supercharge your ad.

“Imagine watching your favorite TV show. The commercials come on, but instead of fast-forwarding through them (as you likely usually do these days), you notice a picture of YOUR friend in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. Your friend is pointing to the business in the commercial saying, ‘Hey, I like these guys. Check them out!’ Amazing, huh?

“Facebook’s ‘Friends of Connections’ ad targeting allows your fans to be featured in your ads,” noted Dave Kerpen, author of Likeable Social Media: Marketing to Win in a Facebook World.

Here’s how you use this option. When you set up your ad, look under ‘Targeting’ and you’ll see an option to display more detail. There you will see the connection on Facebook choices.

You must be an admin of a Facebook page to select the page for the "Friends of Connections" option.

#4: Give Your Fans Fun Reasons to Connect

“People love a reason to get together. Why not have the equivalent of a happy hour on your Facebook wall? Rather than serving up drinks and party favors, ask folks to bring their favorite link. Consider offering networking opportunities by asking folks to share something about themselves. You could also lure people in once in a while with an expert who will answer their most pressing questions,” says Michael Stelzner, founder of Social Media Examiner.

On Social Media Examiner's Facebook page, we had a happy hour and encouraged fans to post their favorite blog sites. It was a huge success!

#5: Use Video as Your Secret Weapon to Gain Fans

“Videos seem to be a preferred medium not only by the fans, but by the news feed algorithm as well. Whenever a non-fan watches your videos, a button pops up in the top left corner suggesting he/she ‘Like’ your Facebook page. To take advantage of this feature though, you’ll have to upload the video file onto the Video Tab inside Facebook (not link to a YouTube video),” said Ekaterina Walter, social media strategist for Intel.

When non-fans view your videos on Facebook, they will see the Like button for your Facebook page in the upper left corner of the video screen. This feature is a great tool to gain exposure and recruit new fans.

#6: Turn Your Facebook Page Into a Lead Generator

Facebook as a lead capture source? “You bet!” says renowned Facebook expert Mari Smith.

“One of the first apps to add to your Facebook Fan Page is ‘Static FBML’ (Facebook Markup Language), which allows you to add your own custom content, including an opt-in box. You can add multiple iterations of the FBML app, and try out various lead-capture systems—ezine signup, giveaway, ask campaign, etc. Each opt-in box can appear on a separate tab, each of which has its own unique URL, allowing you to accurately split test results,” noted Mari Smith, co-author of Facebook Marketing: An Hour a Day.

In the example above, Darren Rowse of ProBlogger uses an opt-in box on his Facebook page to promote his podcasts. Notice how he created a separate tab for the opt-in. This is a great way to call attention to what you want your fans to see.

#7: Turn Your Facebook Page Into a Thriving Community

“Your Facebook presence can serve as a meeting place for like-minded individuals. Make it a point to involve your customers as much as possible. Ask questions and suggest items for them to share on your wall. Ask yourself more than “What should WE share?”—ask, “What would our fans like to share with us and one another?”—and build your strategy around those answers. Allow them to connect with others who share the same interests by encouraging them to use your Facebook presence as a platform for sharing,” said Rob Birgfeld, director of digital strategy at SmartBrief.

By simply asking an offbeat question, a community can emerge, as seen above. This question was posted in the late afternoon on a Saturday and 64 people responded.

Want to Learn More About Facebook Marketing?

If you’re not fully leveraging the power of Facebook, don’t worry, you’re not alone. They are the second most trafficked website next only to Google!

This means your Facebook page will be indexed faster on Google and other search engines, so if you don’t have a fan page, be sure to add one and promote it.

Here are 5 great ways to grow your Facebook fans:

#1: Invite People From Your Facebook Friend Lists

Do you have your personal friends and professional colleagues segmented into lists on your Facebook home page?

I have a number of lists in my personal Facebook account.

You can invite these lists as groups to your Facebook fan page instead of sending individual invites. This is the easiest and fastest way to jump-start your fan base.

When you click “Suggest to Friends” on your fan page, start typing in the name of your friends list in the filtered friends section; for example, “Social Media Professionals.” This will automatically send an invitation to your fan page to all of your colleagues listed in that category.

It’s possible that it may take a while before you start seeing those familiar faces pop up in your fan page because people are busy. There have been a few occasions where I’ve gently nudged them with an individual invite, but I keep that to a minimum.

As you add more people to your network, remember to go back to your same lists and send the invite to the new people you’ve added. The names of those who have already been invited will be grayed out and the invite will only be sent to your new contacts.

#2: Find People With Facebook Search

The updated Facebook Search feature (see the Search bar at the top of Facebook) gives you a view into conversations of your friends and status updates that may even show you who may be looking for the services you provide.

There is even an option to search “Posts by Everyone,” which gives you a glimpse into conversations of people who may not even be connected to you. After entering a search term, there will be a display, “Posts By Everyone.” This allows you to view conversations from others who aren’t in your friend lists.

Here is a screen shot when I entered “buying a home” in the Search field:

As you can see, there is a person saying “I think we are buying a house tomorrow.” If this person is already in your contacts list, the following is a very easy conversation starter: “Hi ___, I saw your Facebook comment about your plans to buy a house tomorrow. Do you need any help with school information in that particular area?”

There is another person stating that they plan to stay in their house for a long time. This can be a potential candidate for a loan refinance. Again, if this person is already a friend on Facebook, it would be very easy to start a conversation without sounding like an annoying salesperson.

#3: Attract People With Facebook Social Ads

Social Ads provide advertisements alongside your Facebook sidebar which show related actions your friends have taken on the site. These actions may be things like “Leah is now a fan of The Offspring. Would you like to become a fan too?” It is possible to tailor ads to your friends and their interests, which makes it more appealing for them to take action because you are interested as well.

This strategy requires a small budget, but can be very effective in finding your target market. It is very important to do a Facebook search with specific keywords in your particular niche to find out if it’s being talked about on Facebook (see #2 above).

If you click on “Promote With an Ad” on your fan page, you can start a campaign. You can set a daily spending limit of $10, $25, or other appropriate amount. Because I market mostly to businesses with my keywords (such as real estate broker, loan officer, real estate investor, and so forth)—which are in numerous profiles as job descriptions—I have been able to use Facebook Social Ads effectively for my fan page.

It’s possible to run your Facebook ads for only 4 to 5 days with a $25 per day budget. Then stop the ad for a few weeks if you like and run the same ad again. This allows your fan page to grow in spurts and I have found it to be very effective in growing my fan base without spending a lot of money at once.

#4: Facebook Fan Page Twitter App

The Facebook Fan Page Twitter application is a great tool that brings your Twitter following back to your fan page. When you post a status update, a link or a photo (you can choose) on your Facebook fan page, there will be an update to Twitter with a shortened bit.ly link back to your fan page. This is just pure genius to drive traffic from another source right to your page.

There are other Facebook and Twitter integration applications; however, this is the one that leads people directly back to your page. This gives them an option to become a fan of your page right at that moment if they click on the bit.ly link from Twitter.

#5: Facebook Fan Box Widget

The Facebook Fan Box Widget is a great feature to add to your blog or website. This widget allows you to show your fan base and allows others to become fans instantly. This is just one way to promote your page across several social media sites. It is important to cross-reference all of your social media sites so others can find you and your websites on other networks.

For more great Facebook tips, be sure to check out Top Tips for Using Facebook for Business .

Editors note: Check out Social Media Examiner’s new Facebook fan page by clicking here.

So what do you have to add to this list? Are you finding other effective ways to promote your Facebook fan page?
