Writers/Authors – Criticular (19 posts)

  • Hello Folks.

I just signed up at http://www.criticular.com - a site that just launched this Memorial Holiday Weekend.

If you are a writer or authored a book of any kind, this may possibly be a place to get critiques of your work and give reviews of books you’ve read.  Like Goodreads but of course, somewhat different.

I had a little trouble signing up (probably a ‘new website’ glitch) but am giving it try out anyhowsen.  Anyone else signed up there yet?

    Eileen :D

  • @supereb

Haven’t heard of it. Are you required to read and review others’ work?

  • @rich-brooks

Hi Rich. – I don’t think so. The only requirement I see is signing up to join in forums and groups to discuss books, writing techniques, etc. so no, I don’t think you are required to do critiques at all.  But the option is there.

    Eileen :D

  • I have a client that was looking for this very thing. You mention criticular and Goodreads. Do you know any other sites that will highly benefit self published authors?

  • @supereb @rich-brooks

I joined Criticular yesterday, didn’t have any trouble signing up. However, the site went down last night before I had a chance to really look around. The site remains down today.

The landing page says something like “give a critique then get a critique,” so it appears that you do have to critique the writing of others.

If the site stays down, I guess I’ll check out Goodreads. Thank you for posting this.

  • does look like it could be interesting. THere are a lot of people that like to be critical in the world, finally a site for them :)

  • Super! Just what I am looking for! Thanks, Super EB!@supereb

  • Hello Folks.

I really like Goodreads and Criticular is not quite a spin off but does have an author as the administrator/founder – I met him on Goodreads.  Criticular seems to be up and running this morning and I had not noticed it being down.

@krmcgee – Thanks for the friend request at Criticular!  I found it this morning in my email. :D

Folks – You can find me at Criticular here: http://www.criticular.com/user/VerbatimEB/friends/received and at Goodreads here:  http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/8080026-eileen for friend requests.

@jasonwiser – IF you like those sites (for your client), you’ll love FanFiction.net. ( find me at Fan Fiction: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/3248344/ )  Fan Fiction is a huge site and is based on the forum types of which most people accustomed.

One of my nieces got me into Goodreads and another relative pulled me into FanFaction.  There are actually quite a few writers in my family so getting pulled into this type of group is not really a bad thing, however many folks have not heard of them.

No reason not to spread the word about these sites as avid readers love this type of interaction with authors/writers.  All three groups mentioned include forums for discussion of stories/books.

    Eileen :)

  • @supereb You’re welcome, thanks for accepting.

The site was back up by yesterday afternoon, but seems to be back down again as I type this. I hope they get things straightened out. The site is a bit buggy, but it’s new so that’s expected. Though one troublesome bug I’ve encountered is every time I log out and log back, the script they’re using doesn’t recognize my password and I have to reset it. Edit: the site’s back now. Odd.

I had a chance to look around and found that you do have to do a critique to get one, unless you start your own group.

I think I’ll join GoodReads since you think it would help reach / interact with readers.

I’m the only writer / artist in my family. I think I was adopted.

  • @krmcgee

LOL – Lots of artists in my family.  I’m actually very thankful for that however, artists are temperamental; we have musicians and composers too.  Just ask ANY artistic person; they know about the temperament stuff, mood swings, etc. Heh.

Goodreads is a really wonderful place and has been around a very long time too. Registered in 2002 with tons of members.

    Eileen :)

  • @supereb

Lots of artists in a family could be a bad thing, a thinning of the talent gene pool divided among large numbers, one might say. On the other hand, your family members probably got more support and encouragement from other family members than I did. It’s been my experience that most people who call themselves writers or artists have no real talent. I’m offended by wannabes like that who think they can work on my level.

Did you detect the subtle temperamental mood swing? I try to keep it to a minimum while conducting business for obvious reasons. Ahahahaha.

I signed up for Goodreads but haven’t done much with it yet. Priorities.

  • found out that criticular is for fiction writing, not my genre, love the concept of the site, though @supereb

  • @deairby – Try this link Dea — VerbatimEB — That should put you at my profile on criticular – I think I listed the wrong URL before.  Sorry about that folks!

Also Dea – Most sites like these are for fiction (novel) writers.  I know what your book is all about and no, you could not call it fiction or a novel, eh?  I do love my copy though.  We’ll have to find a place for cookbook authors, just for you Dea! :D

    Eileen

  • I got a pm from the site owner regarding a few bugs I found, one involving password managers and the page script not playing nice together. The other involved the user profile link. He also replied to my request to start a non-fiction group and said I could start any type of writing group I wanted. So as far as groups go, users can start one for poetry, articles, cookbooks, etc.

  • @krmcgee – Well now, that’s good news indeed.  I’ve talked to him myself several times with site issues.  It may grow into something really good for authors/writers of all genres.

Here is another site I signed up for sometime back but never made it back in there to set up a profile – just my picture is there, heh.

LibraryThing - Library Thing looks to have groups and forums too so if you can set up your own, you can find like minded writers with ease as they will come to your group instead of you going out to find them.

    Eileen :D

  • @supereb criticular sucks prune dried steroids injected bat’s balls. Half the time the server’s down and the other half is spent dealing with all the @##$$%%^^%$$#@! bugs like the login bug I’m still encountering. That site should never have launched with that many bugs still running wild. I doubt it’ll grow into anything but an even bigger pain in the ass.

  • @krmcgee – Language is a funny thing. I suppose flaming another persons website is easy; what’s hard is sticking around and working with people who need help. Well, it’s not hard, but perhaps just a choice that most people don’t or won’t make.

  • @supereb I thought you might appreciate the humor in the imagery or props since you’re a King fan. I haven’t read one of his books in years and have no plans for reading any in the near future. His long winded whining sominexxes me. I didn’t make it half way through dirty pillowed Carrie. The writing was so atrocious I just couldn’t take it any more.

Do you even know what flaming really is? That was flaming bat’s balls harshed professional criticism, not flaming.

I never said I was leaving, now did I? You assumed. I like the idea of the place and I like being around when a site’s being built.

I like your technique of trying to shame me into staying, but I see through such tactics. We just happen to agree that walking away would be the easy thing to do.

I don’t know if most people are too selfish to offer help or not.

Edit: I created a private group called Graffiti Slipknotted Hanging Chads and invite you and anyone else here who’s interested to join. Here’s the group’s info page at Criticular: http://www.criticular.com/group/108/info

  • I’ve concluded that criticular is a site for uneducated amateurs. The owner told me he would not tolerate harsh negative criticism regarding his pretty shitty website. He told me to stick to writing. Told me I didn’t know anything about building a social network. He refused to fix a login bug caused by a compatibility issue with KeePass. He told me to disable my password manager. Imagine if SME told you to do that. You wouldn’t be very impressed now would you?

I already get all the feedback I need here.

@supereb What you said to @deairby was really condescending and I consider that a personal attack. But that’s between you and her. You did the same to me then cried bloody redrum about imaginary personal attacks when I made you eat your twinkie pickled
Ugli Stik smacked words. Don’t pick a fight then whine when you get hit.

I overthrew that rabies vaccinated rottweiler snarled mean retrained Cujo disemboweled pin headed penny wized barking king the day I was born.
