WordPress: Genesis or Thesis? (9 posts)

  • OK, WordPress nuts: Genesis, Thesis, or none of the above? Which is best for small businesses looking to grow…and why?

Does it matter if you’re using WordPress as a CMS or just as a blog?

    Benefits? Negatives?

    Inquiring minds and all that.

Nuts because wp can drive you there with the bugs that crop up. None of the above. I’m using a theme from 2007 called retro mac os. I’m using it because I like the look and because it fits the theme of what I’m doing. I’ve hacked the theme in places to make it look the way I want. Until I launch the new blog, I won’t know if it’s helped my business grow or not. I think a business should avoid using stock themes like genesis because others are using the same theme, which prevents the business from setting itself apart from others.

I’m using it for both. Does it matter? Probably depends on who you talk to.

  • I use Genesis Studiopress themes personally. The support is fantastic, themes are plentiful and tweaking the designs is simple, even for someone with little or no knowledge of coding.

I have used Thesis, but much prefer Genesis. As to not being unique–clear instructions are provided (and a ton of support) to get the look you want. Any theme out there is likely to be used by more than one person. With my theme package, Genesis is kept up to date. Being part of an active group (rather than something that was created years ago and hasn’t been kept up) is really important to me. I don’t have the time or knowledge to maintain the code.

With Genesis, “hacks” are possible via recognized means that don’t cause your site to crash as soon as another update to Wordpress rolls out (which is frequently).

  • @roadturn I agree with Don! The themes aren’t difficult to customise. I found Genesis frustrating when I was first starting because I didn’t understand how it worked. Now, I understand it, I’m loving it! It helps to read the manual and as I’d inherited one of my websites from someone else, didn’t have that luxury until I downloaded the theme suite for myself.

I went looking for Thesis but was put off by their sales page. Didn’t seem that professional.

    First impressions definitely count!

  • We use Thesis for all our wordpress websites. Main reason why we use Thesis is because of the “dual layer” design. You can change the design of the site (the look and feel) separately from the technical site areas.

For a non-technical person it is really easy to add in scripts in the HEAD section or BODY section where required without the fear of making super big mistakes and breaking my websites.

  • Started with Thesis back before v1 and I liked that so many people made widgets for it.

  • I love Genesis Studiopress that’s my choice hands down.

  • I personally use Thesis in most of my designs.

It’s great for the basics by it’s self but I find it very easy for adding in my own CSS and functions.

The have a nice support forum where I can most of my questions answered just by searching it.

I think if you are new to wordpress you might want to go with a premium theme but if you like CSS and aren’t afraid of coding you can get a really nice design.

  • As a WordPress developer, I love Genesis. It has lots of the functionality you need pre-created with lots of hooks that you can use to add extra items into different parts of the website.

It was also created with SEO in mind, so all the code that it generates is SEO friendly, so it will have the formatting that Google will like.
