Seems like it was big in the 80s then somewhat has been fading throughout the years. In part, I believe, with women obtaining more of the equal rights they deserved, access to Board of Directors, etc.
Having said all that, there are original promotions I can recall from the past few years where a transportation company (or any company in the travel & hospitality world) would organize a contest to win a trip for “you and all your girlfriends”. They would, of course, tie it with or around Women’s Day celebrations.
Then there’s all the typical stuff: chocolate, flowers, restaurants, etc. But not very original, is it?
My advice as a marketer is to use that day as a spark to engage discussion on social media and other communication tools of brand. Who’s that special woman in your life and why? Send a picture of a woman who made an impact in your life, i.e. mother, teacher, friend, etc.
My 2 cents.
