When is there any time to read a book anymore? (6 posts)

  • Interested to get people’s input on when they dedicate time for simply reading a book.

Since the digital world has exploded I find it harder and harder to actually sit down and read even though I have a list of titles I am itching to read.

Yes, I read ‘umteen’ blog posts, articles and tweets per day but I keep failing to find any time to just kicking back in a chair with my Kindle with no online distractions.

E.G. I was planning to continue with my present book today and then this email about my membership popped up in my inbox and ‘boof’ there goes another 2 hours.

I read a good post about ‘Focus’ the other day by Mitch Joel but although I agree with it in reality it’s a little harder to put into practice.

I am currently trying to learn as much as I can about digital media and marketing but at the same time don’t want to become a complete slave to the internet.

    Any tips anyone?

  • @simoliver I don’t mean to sound like a smart ass, but just turn off the computer and phone, even if you feel the need to schedule it. Say to yourself or write it on a post-it “I will turn off everything at this time and read a book.”

Also remember that everything you miss on the Internet will still be there when you turn your computer back on.

  • For me it depends what kind of book it is. I’m currently reading a few business start-up books and for these I keep them with a notebook in my kitchen and literally read a few pages at the time while I’m cooking and write notes to use after I’ve finished.
I agree with @mattnowak1 though, for a book I want to sit down for a while with I make sure I’ve completed all my jobs by a certain time and schedule in time to read.

  • @simoliver

When I was growing up–don’t worry, this goes somewhere–my mom would let me watch TV until 9, but read until 9:30.

Now I can’t go to bed w/o reading. So often I get pleasure reading done in batches before bed.

For biz reading it’s tougher, b/c if it’s a good book, I get all wired and end up going downstairs to read it and start to take notes.

So, now I try and carve out other time in my day to do important business reading.

Also, I have an account at Audible, so I listen to a lot of biz books coming and going from work. That’s how I get most of my biz books in.

  • I carve time out at the end of the day as well @Rich-Brooks. Plus there are trips on the Metro (going down to DC), doctor’s appointments, etc. to slip in some extra minutes of reading. If the book is good, such as @TheMetz’s The Social Customer that I’m reading now, I’ll find the time somewhere!

  • Thanks for the input guys.

Luckily my wife is an avid reader and not into social media at all so she sets a good example!

Since the original post I actually have nearly finished a book. Maybe I just need to keep posting the question on forums. ;-)
