What’s the hurry? Is there a ”too late”? (14 posts)

Topic tags: timing
  • With so much constantly changing in social media and business strategies for internet, new developments and apps, and who knows what else is around the corner, do you feel in a rush? Is there a time “hoop” that needs to be jumped through before it is too late? When is too late? Is there a race to be in front of things? How do you pace yourself? How do you, on the one hand, make sure you think through things enough but, on the other hand, don’t wait for the perfect time and miss it?

  • Personally I feel it is never too late and that the perfect time is now if you are not currently useing any aspect of social media.  It will continue to be changing going forward. I do not feel a rush but do not use it as effectively as there is possible.  Why? Because I h ave a pretty full schedule now and have not felt the need to be using it to the extent that many are. I encourage small business owners to become familiar with FB, LI, Tweets, and begin posting regularly.  And the regularly means to fit it  in daily if possible, but not to feel stress & guilt if they can’t . Fit it to their business methods.

  • @deairby It’s tempting to jump on the next thing, but for many of us, it will wind up being a distraction. Taking us away from our focus without truly understanding where it fits in our plans is a slippery slope.

While I love the potential of new things, and many of us do, most of our businesses will not be harmed by our not being very early adopters. I have services, not a product that may or may not be the next trend.

I think it really comes down to knowing your customers and their behavior.

  • I feel that, ultimately, I’m actually sorta lazy.  If a new app or program will shorten the period of time it takes me to achieve my business goals, I’m all for it.  I’m not worried about what’s yet to come in technology.  I’ve been online since 1982 (then on an Atari 400) and have managed to keep reasonably current ever since.  I tend not to be a first-adopter unless I see that something has tremendous potential — like SocialMediaExaminer!

  • @joanmuschampfagnani @deairby With ever tighter agendas, in this fast paced world we are pressed. Perhaps we can only test out these new paradigms in an, occasional, experimental, manner only. I suppose the real test of early adoption, effecacy is a product of ROI, of time by interest.

  • @deairby The people promoting themselves as social media gurus might be “too late” if they are not early adaptors. For me, I first look at what makes sense for my business plan and what benefits my clients. If it’s that important, I make time.

  • Thanks, everyone, for your responses. I tend to be a bit ADOS (Attention Deficit Ooooo Shiny!) Easily tempted to chase the rabbits. With a strong business plan, more focus can be achieved and wiser choices made! (Now where did I put that paper?) @debbielynnava @durkbarton @joanmuschampfagnani @bernsteincrisis @trudy

  • @deairby It depends on what it is and how you define too late?

As a general rule, I don’t think rushing in is a good thing. It sometimes is best to let the dust settle a little bit and then chose your strategy for how you will approach it.

For example, just recently I started using Twitter. I didn’t get it. But there are so many educational resources, and people to follow, that I am able to make it a win-win.

I was early on Facebook, and in that case it really helped me. But, I also understood it better.

So, I don’t know if there is a right answer. To me, it is all test and measure anyway.

  • Right now google+ seems to be where people are saying it is a “must do” with all its special benefits. Are you on THAT wagon? Why or why not? @trudy @donpurdum @debbielynnava @durkbarton @joanmuschampfagnani @bernsteincrisis

  • @deairby I’m kinda-sorta on that wagon, which really means not, I guess. I started on it, but there was such minimal conversation going then. I simply have been focused eslewhere and while it is fairly high on my list to revisit, there are higher priorities.

This is about time management, and being able to devote the right effort to seeing if it works for me.

  • @deairby @joanmuschampfagnani

For better or worse, I’m just posting links to my blog and occassionally will ask a question. Interaction doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as high on Google+ as is Facebook.

But, I’m not stretching myself too thin right now by trying very hard either. I’m taking a wait and see approach with Google+. At some point, I will probably engage.

What I’m really curious about is how much people are using the video “Hangout” feature on Google+.

  • Like long term investing. The longer you wait for the right moment, the farther behind you are getting. You are never going to get in right at the perfect moment so its best to jump in at a spot that looks good and start moving forward…hopefully :)

  • I am not on that wagon nor am I on BranchOut. Think I have a profile on each but do nothing with either.  We can all either spend all day and night on all of this social media or we can get out and network where it counts and make a few dollars to pay the bills. When you compare how many folks as spending hours on social media efforts and then discover how very few are earning any money from it, I relate it to EBay.  A few make tons of money while the majority on EBay only make a very small amount of money.  In both instances it may only be 1% of users are making money, the rest are wasting time chasing windmills.

  • thanks all @trudy @remspoon1 @donpurdum @joanmuschampfagnani
