What would you do – on Twitter? (6 posts)

Topic tags: Handle, Redirect, Twitter
  • Looking for some advice on what to do in this case:  The organization I work for has a name close to a certain restaurant.  Sometimes people don’t look up the Twitter handle for the restaurant, occasionally have complaints and Tweet using our handle but talking about the restaurant.  Would you instruct those tweeters to reach out to the correct account or should I just let it go?  At this point, it’s not producing any negative comments for us per say and for those who follow and know us, the tweets don’t make sense anyway.  Thanks!

  • @jaclynreynolds1 I am moving this over to the Small Business club since this is not Facebook related and Twitter typically gets discussed within that club.

I don’t really have an opinion for you on correcting the tweets unless it is one user in particular using the incorrect handle. In that instance I would private message the individual. You might want to think about posting to the restaurant and letting them know that your handle is used on things directed to them. Then they may do more to ensure people post to their handle

  • Great suggestion!  It’s not a major burden on us, I just don’t want them to inadvertently miss Tweets that could potentially be an issue for them because people are tweeting the incorrect account.  Thanks!

  • @jaclynreynolds1 Get a valid handle for the restaurant and forward / RT the tweets onwards to the restaurant as they come in. Let them deal with it case by case.

Similar, different… I have had my cell phone number for 7 or 8 years. Before me it happened to belong to a really good, semi famous, upmarket photographer. 8 years on I STILL get calls for him. The quickest and easiest response is to just give them his new number and be done within 20 seconds. Easier than saying ‘no’, easier to live with than doing nothing.

  • Great advice!  Thanks Abigail!

  • Another thought (although I’m not sure how useful it might be…)

Depending on the nature of your business/service, you might want to consider going back to the person who’s misdirecting the tweet to tell them about the mix-up.  By saying “misdirected tweet came to [organization that provides xyz service]“, maybe it could gain a truly interested follower for your organization.
Of course, in a second return tweet you could also give them the correct handle.
