What tools do you use to overcome social media content overload? (16 posts)

  • As there is more and more content being pushed on increasing levels of social platforms, it gets difficult to filter all the good stuff out there. Thankfully, there are also new tools being created that help curate content.

In this article 5 Tools to Battle Social Media Content Overload, there are 5 tool presented:
    Summify
    Buffer
    SocialBro
    Bottlenose
    Twylah

Are you familiar with them and do you use them? Any other tools you would recommend?

  • @fredericgonzalo, I haven’t used any of them, but need to. I can totally relate to the overload of information! I’d like to hear what others have used too.

  • @fredericgonzalo  Summify is a great tool to send you interesting blog posts from those that you follow on Twitter.

Buffer is a good tool if not over-used. Basically you should use it when you see a blog post you want to share on Twitter or Facebook – it basically simplifies the sharing process by spacing out your tweets throughout the day instead of posting them all at once.

Twylah basically turns your Twitter into a webpage of sorts. Not sure how it can help you manage content overload.

I haven’t used the others, although I am hearing some good things about SocialBro.

Another great tool in Hootsuite, which lets you manage multiple accounts from one dashboard. And it’s free for up to 5 accounts! :)

    Cheers!Russ

  • @russellallert @fredericgonzalo

I totally relate, too. Will check these out. Thanks.

  • @russellallert I also use Hootsuite to manage my various accounts, and absolutely love it.

In terms of tools, my personal favorite did not appear in this article, and it’s Zite. It’s an application for iPhone and iPad (I do believe it also works on Android platform) and it’s great to generate articles according to your fields of interest.

  • I’m familiar with all of those tools, but I don’t use them. I use Google Alerts, Social Mention and Twitter Search to help with the ‘overload’. I also get a lot of my info from my Facebook friends & pages and looking through Twitter.

Honestly, I feel it’s really important to find those places and people that you absolutely trust to give you the best info and stick with going to their websites/fan pages/Twitter/etc in order to get the info you want.

I really like personally putting in each tweet and status. Have yet to really jump on the automation or tools bandwagon. :) I also don’t even have a lot of time to go looking through all my Twitter friends and such, but I designate certain times to read content and find content. The rest of the time, I don’t bother with it.

It’s all about time management, for my anyway. Just about finding the right balance!

  • @morganbarnhart I agree with you about automation, Morgan. Which is why I am cautious of Buffer and only use it for sharing content I come across while surfing the web.

I also use the tools you mention and they are great! :)

One thing you have to remember about all this, is that these tools are about sharing content, not creating it. If you are not writing/delivering unique content as well as sharing others, you can only go so far.

I wrote a recent blog post on the 5 stages of Twitter use, but I think it translates well across social media in general too. :)

    Cheers!

  • Thank you   @fredericgonzalo for this list. I just signed up for Buffer App on Friday. I still have to figure out how to leverage it. I’m new to blogging so I have a lot of other tolls I need to learn about to help me share my posts more effectively right now. I will keep this list  I can relate to what you are saying very well  @morganbarnhart I felt the same way about automatic posts until I remembered that there are people who are not in my time zone who may benefit from my information. So, I use it to share info at a time that is more comfortable for them. The other side of that, is my story about following someone on Twitter who I held in very high regard as a Marketing Professional. I RT’d her messages because I believed in her message. I was VERY disappointed to learn, as she shared in her FB group, that she NEVER checked in with Twitter. So, there I was helping to spread her message and being ignored. Needless to say I stopped.  I read you post and loved it @russellallert  what a great perspective.  I’m very  grateful to all of you.

  • thanks for starting this thread, I’ve never heard of any of these, I have used hootsuite also but isn’t that to manage the output of content not the intake? @fredericgonzalo @russellallert I went to your blog (and clipped it with evernote to go back more) and thanks so much for sharing your link. Your blog looks great and I can tell contains a lot of helpful information. Finally, I may get a handle on twitter!

  • Thanks @dyanebradley & @deairby I am glad you have liked the articles.

Dyane, you bring up a good point about people in different time zones. But you also highlight why I limit my use of automation – people expect you to be there when you post.

Remember that all the tools in the world will not help you engage with people – only you can do that. :)

    Russell Allert

  • @deairby Hootsuite can help you do both! :)

  • How can it do both? Sorry, I need a translator for all this stuff! @russellallert

  • @deairby

    Hey Dea

You can set up streams in various Tabs which save your searches, Lists, keywords, etc which you can use to sniff out content and keep track of favourite Tweeters, for example.

Start playing around with Hootsuite as it is a truly useful tool and they are adding new features all the time.

If you need to know how to do anything specifically, then let me know and I will try and help.

  • you are the man, Russell! You have added so much to the SME clubs. Thanks. I will “play with hootsuite” @russellallert

  • Thanks, @deairby I am glad you have gotten so much out of my posts. :)

  • @russellallert You are very welcome! I don’t expect people to be there all the time but I’d like them to show up at some point and be grateful. I’m not always “ON” Twitter but take the time to show gratitude. :-)
