What really works!? (13 posts)

  • Hey guys,

Im a social media coordinator for a startup technology company and I’m noticing that our fan pages for our products really aren’t receiving as much engagement as we’d hoped for. We’ve tried contests, posting at different times, a variety of relevant content, photos, videos, etc but we’re missing that “it” factor that can really spark the immense amount of engagement many other brands have received.

have you ever experienced this with your brand? how did you overcome this? What finally worked?

  • Facebook is probably NOT the right place for your products. I would suggest LinkedIn, Biznik, or other business/startup networks.

  • @moniquej It would be great to have a look at the page, but have you tried being personal?

I know this sounds like an obvious answer, but simple things like injecting your personality into the posts and signing off with your name makes a real difference.

Also, who is your target audience? Are they on Facebook? If so, where? Are you a member of any groups on there? Or anywhere else for that matter?

Try and target the early adopter crowd – they are the ones who will use new tech.

What is your app/tech about? Who is that targeted at? Have you find where they are online?

What else are you offering? Free stuff? eBooks? Guides? Knowledge? Help?

How long have you been trying to gain traction? Sometimes it takes a while to build an audience.

    Cheers,
    Russell

  • @russellallert I always love your answers (and questions)

  • @moniquej — would you mind posting a link to your Facebook page and the company website?

  • @moniquej, I have had a look at one of your pages and what I noticed is that all your posts are sales messages. On FB, people don’t want to be sold to in such an obvious way. In a period of 10 days you promoted your Dream Tracker four times!

You should start being a ‘friend’, not a sales person. Why don’t you give some tipps and hints for everydays problems, report on industry news, inform about trends etc - all related to your industry, but not limited to your company.

  • @claudiapoeckl

You’re right, it can definitely make it seem like it is coming off too invasive, and that selling should not happen!

I need to identify the wants, needs, and problems of my customers can help them find solutions. I love your advice!

  • @moniquej — if you don’t mind me asking, how have you been able to get the 10,000 likes? It seems like you’re basically a software B2B, so I presume most of your fans are your existing/potential product users? In order to foster an engaged online community, you need to publish content that’s relevant to your fans. What are your 3-5 biggest sources of “likes”?

Beyond that, here are some general thoughts:

    • When you ask questions, make sure that people can answer in one or two words. Things like “how do you and your team work together” are a no-no, as they require too much effort on the part of the user.
    • A recent study by Facebook has shown that the most effective posts are brand-related, so minimize the amount of unrelated content, e.g. what’s the weather forecast in your area.
    • Stop talking about yourself and follow the 80/20 rule; 80 percent valuable content that your fans will find interesting and relevant; 20 percent talking about yourself.

  • I would suggest a few things.
    1. Choose a well researched theme or set of topics that you feel your target market will like and engage in.
    2. Optimize the aesthetic look to promote branding in line with the theme you wish to promote.
    3. Use Facebook PPC to generate traffic.

  • @samanthagentile Thanks Sam!! :)

  • I agree, Samantha, Russell is the go-to-guy! @russellallert @samanthagentile According to Karen Clark (of my business presence) there is CPR for social media: C=meaningful comments on others pages, too P=post a new meaningful update once or twice daily and R=reply to any comments that are left  @moniquej

  • @deairby Thanks, Dea! I am going to start getting a big head. :)
