What obvious things do some of us forget to do to easily promote our biz? (11 posts)

  • I think all of us forget and/or don’t think of ways in which we could EASILY promote our biz.  For example, I have seen a lot of email signature blocks that are missing critical information (e.g., a link to the company’s website).  What else?

  • I know that in-store a lot of small businesses don’t promote their social media platforms. For most businesses, weekly visits (or even monthly visits) are rare from customers. The best way to keep them connected to your company is through their website, social platforms and e-newsletters. However, so many small businesses don’t push these in-store, when they actually have time to explain the value each platform brings to the customer. Even a simple 3″ or 6″ handout would go a long way to showcasing where and why customers can follow your business online.

    Great question!

  • And a good point, Scott.  Which leads me to wonder, because I’m not sure myself: How much email signature block promotion is appropriate or too much?  In mine, for example, in addition to the usual name, title, business name and phone number, I give my recent book title and my Skype address.  The business name and book title are hyperlinks.  But I’ve seen some people include a lot more than that – and some less.

    Opinions?

  • OH, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that some SME members haven’t taken full advantage of the opportunity to flush out their profiles here.

  • Pushing their social media.  A company can easily be over taken if their online presence isn’t as strong as it should be.  It’s cheapest and most effective way to connect on such a personal level.

  • @bernsteincrisis Many people forget to look at things from their ideal client’s perspective. Remember to answer the ”what’s in it for me?” question everywhere you are talking about your brand or business.

  • Great question. I would say Yelp, Google places page, and long tailed PPC terms. I’m not saying spend a fortune on paid search, but there is no reason not to sponsor terms along the lines of “social media consultant in Deerfield, Illinois” Maybe you get one click for the year, but guess what… they are looking to hire a social media consultant in Deerfield, Illinois. If that is you, it is worth the 20 minutes needed to set up the campaign.

  • Rob, do you mean that businesses should encourage people to review them on Yelp?  I know that’s how I often look for certain types of services — most recently housekeeping and airport transport.  Do you think it also applies to, say, consulting businesses?

  • @bernsteincrisis

Yeah, both just creating the page (SEO benefits) and encouraging folks to review. I definitely think people are looking for consulting and web businesses via Yelp. At my old agency we used to get a few leads a week this way.

  • Something I read, if you still pay bills by mail, is to include your business card with your payment. You never know who will see it.

Don’t forget to use share features on your website so people can pass on information about your business.

If you have a business in which people can come to you for business, use Google Places. You can use videos there and add coupons as well.

And one way to encourage people to review your bus. on Yelp is to post a notice in your office asking people to do this. Yelp provides tips on how to do this.

Also, I’ve seen people promote their business on different sites (e.g., Yelp and yellowpages.com) and offer a different coupon there. Then as people use the coupons, you can get a sense of which sites are most effective in generating business for you.

  • Forgot to add one — the “Refer a Friend” set-up works and is a great lazy way to get new leads. We give existing clients 5% off their invoice (capped at $100) when we do business with their friend.
