What do you think about Referral Key? (10 posts)

  • Maybe you have seen this relatively new Business Network. Do you have any thoughts? (I have a review i will share, but I want to hear from you first)

  • Jason, you are always up on things! I’ve never heard of it. Looking forward to the answers from others. @jasonwiser

  • I signed up for Referral Key a few months ago.  I have not seen any activity through that site.  The one thing that did disturb me, is that when I signed up, I must have selected, but it certainly was not clear and conspicuous, to blanket email everyone on my contacts list, in an effort to solicit business.  I think this approach will eventually backfire on them.  I don’t know if the signup process has changed or if they are still leveraging users contact lists without making it clear beforehand.  It was quite unpleasant to hear from several contacts not thrilled with receiving, what they viewed as spam.  I understand my contact’s position and I agree with them.

  • @mgoes That is exactly the review that I was withholding, so now i can pipe in. And not only do you unknowingly spam all your LinkedIn contacts, but now they have added another spammy feature. Now when you accept someones referral, you must write something about them. The real problem is that often you do not know anything about the person you are trying to connect with and can therefor not give a legit referral. I give Referral Key 2 thumbs down!

  • @jasonwiser  I’m with you 100% Jason.  I dislike giving negative reviews, however, this one is necessary to help others avoid aggravation.  I wish I knew the folks at Referral Key personally so that they would consider my two cents.  People work hard to build businesses and I find it difficult to give and receive constructive criticism if I don’t have some sort of connection.  I wish them well, but they definitely need to change their approach on gathering new business.

  • @jasonwiser I signed up in the fall after being asked by a chamber friend. I have not seen much activity; however, I rarely log into the account unless someone wants to connect. Luckily I didn’t have the same problem as  @mgoes did (that I know of!). Thanks for the heads up however.

  • @jasonwiser

A forced (or even coerced) recommendation doesn’t sound like much of a recommendation at all!

I tend to avoid these new networks, like BranchOut on FB. These days I need a platform to have a critical mass of people for me to invest the time in it.

    Unless it’s got a hook…something I don’t get elsewhere.

  • Yeah @rich-brooks I’m glad to hear you say this. I totally agree. Interestingly you point out Branch out. I was just discussing this with a colleague who says that because it has the power of Facebook driving it, it will overcome LinkedIN. I just said,”huh? maybe.” And walked away. I was not about to waste more time in that conversation. ha-ha.

  • BranchOut is just a FB version of LinkedIn. I actually use it from time to time. ReferralKey, on the other hand, seems to be a waste of time.

You might take a look at ProSkore (a.k.a. FastPitch).

  • Referral Key is definitely a waste of time. BranchOut is not as useful as LinkedIn and I don’t use it. Tried it initially and was just one more thing clogging the inbox.
