What CRM System are You Using? (16 posts)

  • I am really been going through the hoops on this. Custom vs. hosted CRM which is the better option?

I really like Highrise however, I think I need for my purpose something more robust. I need to tie into the web site, landing pages, store, customer service (zendesk), ebay store. As the merchandise is moving quickly, or being discounted sales needs to be advised auto magically of any changes.

Looking at quotes for custom services is giving me a headache. Does anyone have a solution for my quandary?

  • While i do not have the exact solution to your problem, I can up that we use a cloud based CRM in our service based businesses. I know you can also get customized ones. Being able to long on from any where is  just a great feature not to pass up if at all possible.

  • @ptwylie

If you’re looking for something robust, able to integrate easily and is relatively simple to use, I’d go with salesforce as David mentioned.  It’s one of, if not the largest CRM’s and has a ton of cool tools that make integration super simple.

  • @davidhebert @iamconsulting I have looked at Salesforce and it scares me with so much functionality the learning curve looks pretty steep. :)

  • @ptwylie We use VTiger, which is an open source, roll your own type of CRM. It works well for us. It can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be.

  • @ptwylie My association uses Euclid’s ClearVantage. It is a nice basic, non-cloud software. However, when you want to add a module, they can be expensive. I am not sure about customer service.

Some other associations in my office are starting to use Avectra’s netForum which is a SaaS.

At previous jobs, I have used SugarCRM (didn’t spend enough time with it to learn) and Sage’s SalesLogix (it was ok for sales tracking but the marketing uses seemed lacking).

Lastly, you might want to check out Adam Metz’s The Social Customer. He goes through a handful of CRM’s that are good for certain situations.

RE: SalesForce, there are probably YouTube videos on how to use it. I know that they offer some free online training modules because I was trying to teach myself.

  • @amyhallbiz Thank you Amy…great lead I am checking them out now!

  • @kc_kreative I’ll be sure to check out Adam Metz’s The Social Customer. :) Yes, I think a lot of  custom CRM’s are built on top of Sugar CRM.

  • I have used every version of ACT! for years, but not sure that even the current version would help with all that you want to accomplish.  Salesforce, which in my mind is a sort of ACT! on steriods may be your answer. There is a lot of customizing that can be done in both.  Good Luck! @ptwylie

I use and like Highrise, but it does have some limitations if you’re serious about using it as a sales tool and emailing your list.

I got a tour of SugarCRM at a recent event and it looked pretty slick. It’s open source, but i believe there’s still a cost for it.

  • @rich-brooks Thanks Rich I too like highrise however, as you say has its limitations. Cloud based CRM’s are nice but ill affordable when you have several people accessing the platform because you pay for the number of users.

So, we are faced with something custom built for us. This morning I’ll be running through a customized SugarCRM. I’ll report back with my findings.

  • Another one that seems to be catching hold is: http://www.zoho.com

  • I’ve used Zoho when working with small start ups, and it is pretty simple and straight forward. I’ve looked at Salesforce, and although I was impressed, I also knew that I wouldn’t be able to learn it fast enough. The problem of being a small time operation: no time to learn, no money to pay for expertise :D

  • @ptwylie I used Salesforce in the past and really liked it’s functionality and reporting possibilities. We switched from Salesforce because of our business needs in the education arena needing more customized systems. Currently I am working in Leads360 and really like the ease of use and potential the system has. Different fields need different CRM systems but I have found Salesforce to be a strong, time-tested, resource for many marketers.

  • I’ve used SF.com and like it for its customization and integration as well as marketplace of apps built on top of it.However, it’s heavyweight, not that intuitive, and expensive compared to other options. I’ve recently starting using Zoho and like it’s ease and simplicity. Started with the free version then upgraded to be able to do (small) mass emails.

  • @alexandrabriggs Salesforce is really too difficult for small businesses solely, because its platform is base for enterprise solutions. On the other-hand 37 signals addresses solutions more than adequate for small business person.

Where the grey area comes into play is when your business is out-of the-comfort-zone what do you do?

This is why I asked the question to my estimable colleagues. :)

Sugar CRM is an open source solution with a huge support base (kinda like WP)  this is why most custom service providers use as a base to do customization.

Also, if your in need of service  (like we do)  then what bells and whistles do you need and then access if the provider  (for the right price) can you find a common ground. Not always easy ….to find a solution for a very intricate part of your business.
