  • D you use VoiP? What do you use? Why?

  • What do you mean by VoIP @jasonwiser Skype-like or a Verizon level service?

  • I had to stop using Skype due to it’s low quality. I use FaceTime or GoogleChat depending on the client’s OS

  • I’m currently using magicjack plus.  I’m in a narrow band rural area and have had only a few issues.  It works on my wireless network and a cordless phone.

  • @richardmclaughlin either. I wanted to see what others are using. I am with Skype, but the outgoing number will not display and so people will not answer my calls. Bummer. Minor detail until you need to get a hold of someone immediately and their called id say” caller unknown”

@aprilwelch why do you like about Google chat?

  • What does VoiP stand for? I’m just guessing it has something to do with video conferencing? @jasonwiser

  • @deairby | Voice over IP

Wiki: “the communication protocols, technologies, methodologies, and transmission techniques involved in the delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.

  • Cool, thanks, Richard, you are The Mac Daddy! @richardmclaughlin

  • @jasonwiser

I’ve used MagicJack, but not Skype. i have a Google Voice number that is forwarded to my cell phone.

My number shows up on caller id, and I haven’t had any serious issues.

Plus, it is free in the US. :-)

  • @warrenveach Yeah the thing I don’t like about G Talk, if I understand correctly, is that you send them a message to call you back? Something like that. It is not a direct connection right?

  • @deairby i see you got your answer. Thanks,  @richardmclaughlin

  • Jason,

Google Voice is direct connect to, or from the person you are calling. If you aren’t available, it will take a voice message, transcribe it to text and send you an email letting you know you missed a call.

It also allows you to send/receive text messages.

I did a test with it a couple of months ago and didn’t use my cell phone at all for a couple of weeks.

So now I use it as a secondary line for contact.

    @jasonwiser

  • I saw you mention something about Skype on iPhone. How does it work if you are on Skype and a call comes in on your number?  @richardmclaughlin

  • @jasonwiser I never really tested. I have multiple things on my iPhone. First it’s a phone. No kidding. Then I added Skype. At the time my wife was traveling, so Skype was the best solution.
Then I added the Cisco Jabber application and Cisco Any Connect. We use Cisco for VoIP at the office, so I can dial a 5 digit extension and get Ashton, Dallas or Peru – as if I was in the office. The only thing that I noticed (to your question) was music stops when the phone rings from any of these. So I just tested. Skype give the caller a pop-up that says they are on hold and I get the phone call.

  • In my real job, we just switched to VOIP.  I don’t have anything good to say about it yet.  Call quality isn’t very good at all, hangups are frequent.  I’m not sure who our provider is, it is a large corporation.
