Vandelay Premier ”freelance starter kit” – Legit or sham?? (8 posts)

  • I found a great proposal online the other day, but it didn’t have the contracts I was looking for. After further digging, I came across Vandelay Premier “freelance starter kit.” It seems very comprehensive, but for $49.00 I’m wondering if it’s too good to be true.

Here is the sales caption: For purchasing the Freelance Starter Kit you’ll get contract templates to use on client projects, identity sets (letterhead, invoices, propsals, business cards), documents and spreadsheets for running your business, marketing materials like brochures and email newsletter templates, print templates for portfolio books, and more.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

  • I would assume that for the price of USD 49 you would get a very standardized portfolio of materials, ie a limited set of templates where they simply fill in your logo and contact details.

As for letterheads and other stationery it could be OK as long as the templates allow you to respect your colours, fonts etc. A brochure, newsletter templates etc I would never buy off the rack. You will be very limited with regards to the structure and how you are going to present your content.

As for the contract templates, I think they will be very generic. So they could be useful as a basis but they very likely need some rework based on the legal requirements for your industry. I prefer to get those templates from my local chamber of commerce (for free).

I could imagine that they set the price for this package so low because at the end, if it’s not sufficient for you or you only use parts of the package, it’s not a big loss for you. But it’s still easily gained money for them since they set up the stuff once and sell it a million times ;-)

I’m always a bit dubious about templated “kits”.

I’ve used a site called tweak.com in the past for my brochures, business cards etc. You can look at the templates before you start working on them and totally customize them to suit.
It’s more expensive than the template package you’re looking at but much cheaper than using a designer. You can either send your artwork to print from the site or download the artwork to give to a printer.

  • @deniserubright Wasn’t “Vandelay” the name of George Costanza’s phoney company in Seinfeld?

    I would be wary. :)

  • @deniserubright

It depends on what you’re looking for. The contracts are very thorough and do have all of the content pre-written.  The rest of the stuff like the identity and marketing stuff is “lorem ipsum”, meaning it doesn’t have any content that you can adjust so you’re on your own.  It is a nice starting place and I believe it’s well worth the investment.  You may want to look into their memberships as well.

They have a 6 month membership for the same price which gives you access to all of their stuff.  I think it’s a much better deal.

  • @iamconsulting I will check that out. Thanks!

  • @russellallert

You beat me to it! Somewhere George Costanza is laughing!

  • @rich-brooks Haha Rich! :)
