Valentine Day Promotion? (22 posts)

  • I am wondering what kind of advices should I give to our clients when talking about Valentine day promotions. It’s just a too good marketing event.
How to start to think about what to promote? Can that be true that even unsexy products/services can make a valentine day promotion?

  • I am running one on Twitter for one of my clients and they are a Credit Union. You cannot get too much less sexy than a financial institution. :)

We are combining both and giving away chocolate coins as incentives.

I think almost any business could promote love in some way, and it is a great time to start thinking about this now!

    Russell Allert.

  • My husband and I have a carpet cleaning business and we promoted how much we love our customers and gave them a special Valentine discount.

  • Being a florist, we have a definite advantage lol. Two big issues – trying to get men to order early and buying flowers more than once a year.  We’ve used traditional marketing (paper & radio) free delivery, free box of chocs, with almost 0 conversion. We’ve also included free red rose to the recipient and had very few show up with the card.

I’m not even touching on the subject of men can’t think past Red roses when most women prefer other colors. Seriously you are getting the worse value at the highest price on valentines day.

  • Listen to @jeniferswanson (I know, I once worked in a florist shop). Show your creativity instead. How about ”we love our customers all year long–and here are monthly rewards and great customer service to prove it” OR “tell someone you love them August14–and get a gorgeous bouquet at half the February price without worrying it will freeze on their doorstep.”

You might also do something to cheer those who really struggle through Valentine’s Day and all the “I love you” (or not) stuff. As a company, you can share something of value instead of coercing people to buy. As an individual, you can visit someone in the hospital, call a friend who just lost a loved one, take food to your local food bank, or be a good listener. Sure, Valentine’s Day is a big money-maker, but showing you care is priceless.

  • Love your ideas @debbielynnbutler!

  • Some other ideas,

Partner with a related company near by, maybe a restaurant and give out a coupon for the restaurant. The restaurant could work with you and give out a coupon for your business.

You could also start a tradition of giving a percentage of your revenue to a charity. Maybe your customers could even vote online each year on the ones you suggest.

  • One of my clients, The Gift Authoritu, is a small out of the way gift shop. They have had tremendous growth since opening in October due to the social media and marketing from me. Don’t you love it when clients believe you? They are offering a free rose with baby’s breath for every purchase of $30 or more from feb 10th. Pushing it in Facebook, twitter, print in local newspaper and in their news list. Should be good!

  • @debbielynnava You gave me a very good idea! Call to action messages could target single people too… @karenolenick Karen, this partnering idea sounds good! Now I am thinking about selling unsexy products without partnering with anybody. @michellefontaine I will put your idea in the infographic I am editing now.

I have some crazy ideas for unsexy brands:

insurance company: Insure the happiness of your life together! (life insurance)
wellingtons: Take her to a countryside adventure / fishing.
language school: Tell her in multiple languages how much you love her! / Dare for more than a French kiss!
doors and windows: Keep the noise inside the flat!
financial consultancy: Do you know how much a relationship costs?
loan: Every woman wants a diamond on her finger. / She wants to invite 400 guests to your wedding?
furniture store: Moving together? You need a double bed.

  • ps. sorry for the language mistakes – I am not a native speaker. :)

  • Life Insurance – think that could use some modification
A symbol of your love, invest in your future with life insurance.
Show how much you love each other, invest in life insurance.

furniture store: Moving in together? Time to get a larger bed (usually king or queen, not double)

Doors and windows: Show your love. Keep the noise and cold out with new doors and windows.

Financial…: What is the best way to invest in your future?

Don’t understand the other ones enough to comment

  • I am running a special “Fall in Love with Your Business” for Valentine’s Day. The offer is a reduced price on all planning materials – comm plans, business plans, etc. – and reviews of current branding, communications and websites!! For my small town this is really different than anything other companies are doing.

  • In the hospitality world, Valentine Day is huge: restaurants, hotels, resorts, etc. In recent years, instead of focusing on the day itself (Feb 14th), I would always try to extend it, somewhat similar to a Boxing week approach.

You can offer a promotion where it’s “bring someone you love, and that person gets 50% off”. That works well for ski resorts, for example, and the good thing is this promotion basically works for anybody, whether you are in a couple or not. Someone you love can be a brother, parent, grand-parent, friend, etc.

We actually ran a promotion like that in the past, where it was the whole month of February that was featured under the promotion, so it’s always good to look beyond the day itself, and extend the occasion, so to speak.

  • Starting Valentine’s Day promotion at the beginning of February is a very good advice @fredericgonzalo! I like the  “bring someone you love, and that person gets 50% off” advice too. More and more things to write in our infographics.

“Fall in Love with Your <your product/service>” is also a very good idea! I can imagine “Fall in Love with Your Boots” when you can buy red boots. @roguecitrus

I fell in love with your ideas already!

  • @zsuzsaszab, starting v day promo in fb isn’t hard enough. But everything depends on the sector/nature of the client business. For example retail/consumer goods business is most likely to succeed in the v day promo while service/professional sector or industrial business can not attract that much of fun by valentine and other such promo. I have recently initiated a v day promo scheme for my client who sell carpets around australia and they are just doing well. You may check it hereLet me know if i can be helpful to you in further area.

  • Great ideas! When I owned a restaurant, I had a special dinner for V Day and partnered with a florist. The ticket price included long stem roses for the ladies presented at the table. Debbie.

But here’s a totally different approach! How about making 2/14 SAD Deal, i.e. Single Awareness Day Deal! There are  just too many potential customers out of love out there.

    @debbielynnava @karenolenick @zsuzsaszab @moinshaikh @fredericgonzalo @roguecitrus  @jeniferswanson @michellefontaine @russellallert
