using vianetworks.net for hosting? (7 posts)

  • Just wondering if anyone is using vianetworks.net for website hosting.(I haven’t seen it mentioned on here yet.)  We are working on updating our church website and it is presently hosted here. Also, Dreamweaver is what the person who has been working with it is using. I want to help but not take over. (sensitive issue) Any thoughts?

  • @deairby

Had not heard of them. Generally I don’t recommend moving hosting for simple sites if the hosting is not an issue.

My biggest frustration w/DW is just that every time I upgraded my OS I found DW no longer worked and I had to buy an upgrade.

    #fail

Now I’m on WordPress and couldn’t be happier.

  • think we will be moving to wordpress, I really like it.@rich-brooks

  • As a web developer, my tool of choice is Dreamweaver although if you’re used to using Wordpress, go for it.

I have not heard of vianetworks.net but just reading over their website, they seem a bit pricey for the services they offer. This is just a cursory glance at their offerings but perhaps you don’t what they have. There are many web hosting companies out there. I use FatCow.com and 1and1.com for my websites; they’re both terrific.

Good luck with what you decide.

  • thanks, Rob appreciate your time invested. haven’t heard of fatcow or 1and1 that add even more to the list of choices…… @robmitchell

  • @deairby I have had 2 clients with 1and1. I had memorably dreadful experiences with off shore support with both of them. The company philosophy seemed to be ‘polite is better than truthful’. If the current hosting is working, don’t move it – it will be more time and effort than it is worth.

There are a gazillion hosting options out there. I encourage you NOT to feel the obligation to investigate all of them. A handful seem to win consistent accolades in these clubs – HostGator, BlueHost, DreamHost and Network Solutions. Yes – there are people who have had success elsewhere -  I don’t want to deny it. But these 4 seem to consistently get good reviews from web developers  who have interacted with multiple hosts.

If the current site is maintained in Dreamweaver, it will need to continue to be so. (or by hand, or in another tool). It can be rebuilt in WP ($$) but it cannot be accessed through WP unless it is rebuilt form the ground up. For the record – not attempting to solicit work – my company has done a lot of these rebuilds when clients like the look and feel of their current HTML site but want to maintain it in WP rather than DW. And who can blame them? So I know it  is do-able but  there is a cost attached.

  • thanks, Abigail, good to know @abigailgorton
