    We are trying to get more active on our blog and social sites, but the type of business we are in doesn’t typically come with a great opportunity for custom images, so, we are looking at using stock photos. Is this something that we would always need to purchase or can you site the source and include in your blog post? i.e. istock.com, gettimages.com…

    Typically, you would need to pay in order to use stock images. However, there are sites like http://www.sxc.hu/ that are offering limited stock images.

    If you are tight on budget, you can visit http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/by-2.0/ Doing a search will reveal a collection of photos that you can use as long as you credit the uploader or owner of the photo.

    We’ve bought a lot of images from http://www.istockphoto.com/ many from as little as a dollar. That said we’re getting a lot of images from PInterest. We run them through google image search for background info and if there is none, it’s fair game FB is also supplose to be increasing the size of the preview image when posting a link..

    As @wayneliew mentioned, the Creative Commons license at Flickr is great for finding images. I switch between “relevant” and “interesting” to find the best possible link. (Pro Tip: Thanks the photographer under the photo on flickr and create a link back to your post so he/she can see it…and you can generate some additional traffic that way!)

    Also, my business doesn’t always lend itself well to photos, but I’ll take out my iPhone, snap a photo of my computer or screen, Instagram it, and use that as an image. Free, and you own the copyright!

    Thank you all for taking the time to post replies! Your insight is appreciated – I’ll check out the sites you’ve referenced here, and be better about taking some of our own images with my good ol’ iPhone :)
