  • Everyday on the forums I run across a new “thing” that is mentioned. Today I ran across rockmelt. I think it is a browser or something. I don’t know what it compares to or replaces. So, if you are using it and can shed some light, I’d appreciate it.Thanks,

Greetings Dea, I remember you ran over it ;-) . Yes, Rockmelt is a browser. It is Chrome-based so you can use the full Google Extension library. The main idea of Rockmelt is to pull all of your social media activities into your browser experience.

You link Rockmelt to your diverse social media streams and Rockmelt displays news, notifications, chat etc. in different edges across the screen – and of course you can update your FB status from here or tweet via the address bar etc. All of that makes Rockmelt a true successor of Flock that is not supported any more.

Furthermore Rockmelt includes the sync idea of Firefox (or Delicious etc.), i.e. all of your bookmarks, edges and so forth are synced across your Rockmelt instances throughout various platforms. A view-later routine lets you add stories to a special app. And since it also syncs your social media activities you’ll never read a story twice.

Rockmelt is still in beta. Mobile platforms are currently tested as far as I see, also there are new functions pouring in day by day like “social read” that enables you and your FB friends to share articles from across the web. Since Rockmelt is still FB-based invite-only, I can send you an invite once you add me on FB.

  • …ah well, it looks as if Rockmelt is not in beta any more. In that case: happy downloading!

  • @deairby here’s a Wikipedia article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RockMelt :-)
