using Foursquare? Why or why not? (5 posts)

  • With all that is available and to be focused on why would anyone add foursquare to the mix?….unless it has been beneficial! So, anyone have a story to tell about “how foursquare changed my business”?

  • @deairby

I can’t say that “Foursquare changed business” but I can say that we have a lot of success at one of our sites. We registered our business (which is free) through Foursquare and received the “check-in here” sticker for our office window as well as capability for analysis of check ins through analytics. We have a student who became “Mayor” of the site and we found that many other students began to check-in. For us this was a huge benefit since each “check-in” sends to the users “friends” on Foursquare (and if the user chooses Facebook and Twitter) which then gets our company name out to more people and potential prospective students.

I wouldn’t say it is the right addition for every business, but the possibility of increasing check-ins that sends a “sonic boom” of your business name can be a great benefit! I’m happy to answer any questions you might have. We have other sites that haven’t had a large Foursquare following as well so I can look at both sides of the spectrum.

  • @deairby I do not use it, and personally am not impressed by “check-ins” too often.  But back in VA I used to belong to a loose networking group, and two local businesses used it with good results. One in particular was a car wash that would run short term “sales” for its followers, when busienss was slow.  He said it worked well.

And I do agree with @alexandrabriggs that it can help to get a business name out on networks like FB. Just getting mentioned in a small business may make others’ friends aware and try your business.

Again, I think it’s a category thing, and would require monitoring to see if it was worth the time invested

  • @joanmuschampfagnani @alexandrabriggs thanks, obviously this would work only for “brick and mortar” businesses, perhaps something to have new businesses launch at start up to grow awareness

  • @deairby

Yes, Foursquare only works for the brick and mortar businesses as the check-ins. If you have been on the Foursquare mobile application at all, when you have “friends” you are linked to in your area that check-in somewhere you receive a notification of their check-in. There are restaurants that have discounts upon Foursquare check-in as well as different stores doing the same. This drives many to check-in regularly on foursquare and follow different individuals. There is also the element of Foursquare being a game where “friends” try to become mayor and earn as many points as possible to “top the week leader board” among their friendships.
