Types of small business in SME club?? (22 posts)

  • I’m curious?

How many small businesses here in the SME club are information businesses i.e social media services, graphic design, advertising, coaching, consulting (even though you may have some products like books/guides etc)

How many are product based business?  Product in the sense of a tangible, physical inventory like antiques, jewelry, small handmade widgets, etc, etc.

I ask because I’m trying to organize my head around some thoughts I’ve been having about how these 2 types of business have rather different social media needs.

    Thanks – Nan

  • @nancystuckwisch my personal business is B2B consisting primarily of intangible services with a few hard items.

However, I am heavily involved in one of my clients product based (restaurant) business so I sort of fit both profiles in a round about way.

  • Because I create and manage online content for clients (making my business a B2B service business, by the way), I’m finding even product-based businesses are in the information business. To reach their ideal customers, at least a portion of their online presence must include valuable information that answers the questions and concerns of their target market instead of just constantly selling.

  • Full service florist – so product based but it’s not enough anymore to stay happily designing in my shop and my industry can no longer rely on the big boys (ftd, telefloral, 1-800, etc.) to be our partners. Their fees and dishonestly in advertising and marketing to the consumer is killing us. If we don’t step out and learn all this social media marketing and ecommerce tech stuff we won’t be in business in another few years.  I think this applies to a lot of retail fields.

  • @debbielynnava – yes I agree.  Information, content, and engagement in support of our main product business. It makes it a big job to do the SM outreach on top of doing the actual ”business”  :)

@jeniferswanson – very interesting.  And you are in a product business with a highly perishable inventory (at least my silver doesn’t wilt!) Where are you located?

@dakotalocal – TY for your answer Jon.

I’m not quite sure where I’m going with this yet…but I can feel the beginnings of an idea in the back of my head. Thanks for your responses…the feedback is really helpful.

  • @nancystuckwisch I own two  businesses one is Marketing Consulting Agency and
the other is a Mobile Marketing Agency specializing in developing Mobile Apps for businesses.

  • @Nancystuckwisch I’m in LaPorte Indiana.  It’s in the Northwest corner of the state at the bottom tip of Lake Michigan.

  • @Nancystuckwisch I own and operate Nancy’s Fabrics in Ronceverte, WV.  I specialize in high-quality cotton quilting fabrics and quilting notions.  Nancy’s also offers various quilt and sewing classes and several Quilt Blocks of the Month programs through out the year.  Peace, Robert.

  •  @nancystuckwisch My virtual assistant business isn’t so much product based as it is service based. B2B, but with administrative services rather than products.

  • I’m in the UK and I run alternative wedding fairs so I guess you could say I’m big into events and marketing.

  • @nancystuckwisch great question!  We are product based and sell handcrafted jewelry.

  • @nancystuckwisch I’ve just start up my virtual assistant business.. I offer wordpress and social media services but I’m planning to offer product services in the future.

  • @nancystuckwisch I am services only, but you need to look at all aspects carefully to identify opportunities. It requires a full understanding of your business and objectives to craft your plan.

I offer marketing services, mostly virtually, so I would say location-based platforms are not a priority for me. But a retail location can do quite a bit with them.

Just an example. Also if there is an industry group that has a community for your market niche, that might offer opportunity.

  • The lines between online and offline are blurred. I’ve been in book publishing, but I was doing the graphic design, so I didn’t deal too much with the physical distribution.

Now I do marketing and design. Mostly social media marketing and local marketing.

And I just started delving into product development and marketing.

    Never a dull moment!

  • Thanks for all these great answers! @joanmuschampfagnani I’m in total agreement it takes a macro as well as a micro perspective to craft and execute a biz plan.

As I said Ive got an idea just taunting me…I think I can grab ahold of it and then it darts away again!

Nice to meet more product people. @robertbaker @evanthiajewelrydesign do both of you have an offline location as well as your online presence?

  • @nancystuckwisch

Hopefully it’s not too late to chime in here. I run flyte new media, a web design and internet marketing company in Portland, Maine.

Most of our clients are small businesses in a wide variety of industries, although we do some work with non-profits, a few health care organizations, and we recently started consulting with a Maine-based bank.

  • @rich-brooks – not too late at all Rich.  Thanks. :)

  • @nancystuckwisch I am both, I own a tea and gift shop, have just published a cookbook and working on another book,  I am a speaker and a blogger. I’m trying to build an online presence. Can’t decide if I want to grow my online store with the products from my brick and mortar space. I’m in information overload here on SME. I will be helping a friend (for free) to get online with fb.

  • @deairby…ahhh infomration overload…it’s a familiar state once you dip your toes into the online world :)

  • We are both.  We provide web design and socialmedia marketing, as well as printed products, promotional products and photography services.  We have found it to be a great fit for my partner and I to be able to offermoretoour clients.

  • @nancystuckwisch   Hi, my business is Social Media Consultant, developing Facebook pages for businesses (local but wanting to develop it globally, and Facebook at present, but that will be growing into other social media platforms later)
