Twitter Tightens 3rd Party Rules (9 posts)

Topic tags: Twitter
  • I’m reading this article on how Twitter is tightening its regulations on how 3rd party apps can access its platform, and is “discourag[ing] independent software developers from creating Twitter apps.”

They want to control more of the experience and get people to use their own apps.

What do you think? Good idea or bad? Will it change whether/how you use Twitter?

  • I think it’s a bad idea.  I use Hootsuite and I love it because it makes it so much easier for me to keep tabs on my account.  I’m sure there are many others out there who feel the same way.  Unless they come up with their own systems that compare to these 3rd party apps, I think they are making a big mistake.

  • @rich-brooks good for Twitter. If they can keep up with the apps needed in the marketplace.

  • This may sound funny but I sit on the fence with this one.  I was in on the development of one such twitter app however with changes of the last few years, it is mostly like many others out there, a tad outmoded.

I think the success of the outside apps has moved twitter to do more; better. And at this point, they realize the importance of development more than ever.  IF the outside apps have moved twitter to pour more time/money into further development, Yea!

So the outside apps have done that job; twitter is aware that they could do much more for their users.  If others have made a load of cash on their barnacle twitter apps then why shouldn’t twitter take note and shoot for those very same dollars? After all, twitter is the Mom of short and sweet and the others have attached themselves to this much bigger fish.

One place to do it all gets my vote however, it did take the push of the barnacles to get twitter against the dyke.

It depends on if twitter is up to the challenge that has been put before them.

    Flip-flop flip-flop.

    Eileen :)

  • @rich-brooks I’m leery of what Twitter can do given they messed up TweetDeck after buying it (and why I use an older version). I do understand that they need to get a handle on their information however as I run across new apps all the time (through SME mainly!). It would be nice to have a list of approved vendors. For example, there are so many apps out there providing analytics!

  • @rich-brooks I really like the open api as it holds a wealth of information. You can research any clients niche using only the api, a couple of tools and spreadsheet formulas to create some amazing info.

  • Thanks everyone for weighing in…lots of good thoughts.

After reading through these, I have to say that although they may succeed, it feels like they’re shooting themselves in the foot.

Here’s why: when you have dozens or hundreds of companies reliant on your platform, you create your own little ecosystem with everyone trying to make sure you succeed, because they have a vested interest.

When you take that away you increase your control, but you lose your supporters. They’ll move on to other platforms and other adventures, and may leave with a bitter taste in their mouth.

They’re almost sure not to promote your products and services any more.

  • @rich-brooks I think you’re right!

  • @rich-brooks I think you hit the nail on the head, Rich. When close companions become competitive, things tend to fall apart. Twitter’s alienating the wrong crowd if they want to survive and still thrive.
