Twitter Plan / Consultant Sought (8 posts)

    Plan A
Brookbend.com is focusing marketing in its Patio Storage category. I am soliciting 250 shelter magazines and newspapers to be finished by May 1st, offline. Want a plan to use Twitter to target editorial types who are already on my media list and those who are not. Need rudimentary Twitter help but the emphasis is the strategic plan. I have the time to execute it myself.

    Plan B
To add a B-C effort starting in September. [I may be wrong but I figure a B-C effort can not grow big enough over the next few months to matter; hence leveraging the media in the near-term is better. I have had good success with Brookbend (founded in 2001) PR].

    Plan C
I plan to contribute articles (3 ?) on blogs. Need help qualifying which blogs would yield the payoff.

I would be most impressed with consultants who understand multiple parties in an industry, and how to determine which ones to include in strategic relationships to create a multiplier effect.

  • Hi @pmarc,

If you’re looking to use Twitter, you’ll want to find out who the influencers are in the industry.  There are a few saas companies out there that can help you identify influencers however you can use Twitter’s search feature as well but will take much more effort.

I would include looking into radian6, mpact (mblast.com), traackr or sysmos’s heartbeat.  Or if you have a tight budget you can try a hybrid approach and use a few different sites like klout, Twitter search, tweepsearch and a few others.

Identifying good blogs can be a little tricky because there are a lot of spammy blogs out there that just post articles to make money on selling ad space or links.

I like to set up my Google Alerts to include blogs that do posts about specific keywords, perhaps in your case on “patio storage” and then just check out the blog.  You can download a tool for your browser called seo quake (make sure you’re browser specific) and you can see what type of alexa rank they have, page rank, etc. and do a thorough visual inspection.  Read some of the articles, look to see if they have any links within the text that are ads when you hover over them, see how many ads they have on the page, etc.  Most of the time I can see whether or not I would like to associate my business or a clients with 1 min.

I think you have some good ideas here but developing a strategic approach that includes every objective/goal you have and then planning how you’ll achieve them will really be helpful.  I personally use mindmaps.  They’re ridiculously helpful.  My personal favorite is http://www.mindmeister.com/ but any will do.

Let me know if you need any help getting started.

  • @iamconsulting has some great advice re: seo quake.  It’s a good tool.  Also check out Technorati re: identifying relevant blogs.

  • @dscottwalker Thanks!

  • @pmarc Once you identify who are the  influencers  in your niche. Follow their blogs see if their the right fit. Develop a relationship; ask if you can contribute some relevant articles. I’m sure they would be more than happy.
To find the best blogs in your niche go to http://alltop.com/ and search for your niche. Chances are you’ll find whats trending in your industry.

  • All good info. Thanx.

Paul, that sounds interesting for my blog plan.

Any ideas for using Twitter to reach magazine editorial people?  My target market is 400 writers, together they represent 5,000,000 consumers.

  • @pmarc I think @ptwylie is on the right track with his relationship advice.  If you already know their Twitter handles follow them and chime in when it’s relevant.  Then you’ll have a relationship established when it comes time to pitch them.

  • @pmarc I would start with Twitter search using the search modifiers to hone down your search specifics then make a list for your spreadsheet of likely candidates. Also, you can hone in on some lists of magazine editorial people. @dscottwalker (thanks for the mention :)
