tumblr, linkedin and other SM (7 posts)

  • First of all, please forgive me if my question is too basic: this is all new for me. I got here through a wonderful video by Amy Porterfield and since then, I have done a lot of progress with my Facebook page use.

I noticed there is a great article about Linkedin, which I will study later – I’ve got a pretty large network there.

But people are talking about Tumblr and Pinterest. Pinterest is ok: I’ve figured that out. Not for me right now: I wouldn’t have time to use it productively. As for Tumblr, I wasn’t even able to open an account. I just can’t figure the platform. It is SO user friendly that it is dumb.

For example: it asks for your e-mail, password and name. Just that – to open your account. When you fill those fields, you receive an error message about the size of your URL. I looks like a stupid bug, but I doubt it. I sense it’s more like it’s “too” user friendly and I just couldn’t figure how to handle it.

Can someone help me? Or advise me on it’s actual usefulness?

    thanks

    Marilia

  • Hi Marilia,

Tumblr is a very easy platform to start blogging and share posts, photos. Not sure why you are getting this error message.
What URL are you talking about?  yourname.tumblr.com?

    Warm regards,Erno

  • No, it doesn’t work. The “sign in” for tumblr is:

    emailpasswordname

When I fill those in, I get an error message:

“As URLs do Tumblr podem conter apenas letras, números e traços.”
That means: Tumblr URSl can only contain letters, numbers and dash marks.
Also, I don’t want to use this in Portuguese: this is not the language I most use for professional communication. But the damn platform identifies my IP and automatically opens a Brazilian window. Maybe that’s where the bug is…
So, I can’t even create an account, that it.

  • It looks like a bug… I mean, I’m pretty knowledgeable with platforms of any kind and the error message doesn’t make any sense.

Also, the sign in page is weird: only three fields? This is not possible, except if it leads to a next page.

However, I thought it could be something on my computer – some firewall thing. Because there are semi-illiterate Brazilian users in Tumblr. Therefore, it is possible to create an account (pure logic).

  • I sent a message to them:

“Hello, your system seems to be deffective here or else there’s some incompatibility with my computer config. Your sign in page asks only for “email”, “password” (only once, weird) and “name”. After that, I get an error message: “the URL can only contain bla bla bla”. Also, I don’t want to use it in Portuguese. I can’t find where to shift the platform to English. I can’t create an account. Can you help me?”

  • @marilia-coutinho

Hmmm…does it redirect you to a different domain? Maybe you can force it back to the main site?

That being said, you don’t need to be on every platform!! Focus on building a better presence on one or two platforms before moving on.

I’m on many platforms, and although I probably set up a tumblr account at some point, I’m not using it, and the lights are still on and I’m still in business. :)

  • No, it doesn’t. I just get the tiny error message (white letters) inserted in the middle of the fields.

Looks very much like it’s their bug.

Actually, I just wanted to get a feel of what Tumblr is. Usually I create an account and play around. If it looks like it might be useful, I keep it. Otherwise, I delete it.

I have a very strong facebook profile and page and also Linkedin. I believe I need to master FB first, which I’m doing with the help of you guys (and it’s working!), then Linkedin, then I’ll think about any other SM tool.

I also have a cool youtube account, which I use a lot, a Flickr account, which I don’t and… have you guys ever heard of orkut? It’s a pretty Brazilian phenomenon. Business-wise, it became completely useless. I leave the account sitting there and share blog posts, just like twitter…
