Promoted Tweets and Accounts (TOTW: 2.4.2013) (10 posts)

  • A little while back Twitter made their advertising platform more accessible to small businesses.

Has anyone tried it? You can promote specific tweets or your twitter account. It’s a PPC model, and I believe you only pay when someone follows you through the promoted account or clicks or engages with a tweet that’s been promoted.

There’s a $100 credit going on right now, so I jumped on board.

Would love to know what your experiences have been. If you’ve never tried it, why don’t we all try it this week and report back next week?

Look forward to hearing about your experiences and experiments.

  • Tried it and got zero traction – zero charges

  • Hi  @rich-brooks  —

I have thought about it but did not jump in.  A hundred dollar credit? OK, I’ll go give it a shot.

    Back with reports later.

Early reports. I ran promoted tweets (as opposed to promoting my account) for a new blog post I was featuring.
First tweet: ran about 24 hours:

    • 1,197 impressions
    • 3.01% click through rate
    • 36 clicks
    • $22.50 spent
Second tweet: ran about 6 hours:
    • 392 impressions
    • 2.30% CTR
    • 9 clicks
    • $5.63 spent
I’d say mixed bag…HOWEVER, the post has 1,176 retweets…which is pretty good for a blog that’s less than 6 weeks old! :)

Admittedly, it’s a slightly controversial post, and I promoted it in LinkedIn groups where it would be seen by responsive web designers. ;)
Hard to know how much the promoted tweets impacted the higher than average RTs.
Next time I run this experiment (I still have over 1/2 my money left), I’m going to create a tracking URL through URL builder so I can see exactly how much traffic is coming through the paid ads (and the rt’s of those ads) vs other traffic.
I also wonder if that will have a negative impact on the RT # on the site.

  • Kudos – those are great metrics – will have to revisit

  • @rich-brooks I claimed my credit, but haven’t minimal response. Changed my promoted tweets, so now it’s time to check again what my stats are.

Hopefully the test shows some better results with a completely different approach.

I also plan to try it again when I have my wordpress website built with better functionality to capture subscribers to the blog, and my new blog that will also launch then. Part of the issue is a poor backend to my existing site.

  • @rich-brooks @mitch-rezman  I used my $100 coupon and got zero return. Not worth the investment.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani @rich-brooks where would one find said credit?

  • @tcjw

    Mine was emailed to me.

  • ah yeah it’s only US based… damn. Us Brits will have to use real moneys =[
