Your Biggest Social Media Challenge? (TOTW: 6/17/2012) (26 posts)

  • Hey all,

What’s your biggest social media challenge today?

Is it around content creation? Building an audience? Turning fans into customers?

Maybe it’s about a specific platform, or dealing with unhappy customers who are tweeting their complaints.

Whatever it is, let’s share it here and maybe we can help each other out.

I’ll start: my biggest challenge is finding the time to keep up with everything. Despite trying to use an editorial calendar, I often just let certain things drop. (I just realized I haven’t written my June newsletter, which usually arrives the first Tuesday of every month!)

    OK…now it’s your turn!

  • Good day all,

my biggest challenge right now is turning fans into customers (partners). For some reason I’m actually having a hard time interacting with my Fans on my Page? Key to my success in my Business is inviting people to watch our business presentation and that’s not working right now, at least via Social Media.

Any thgoughts on this will be much appreciated.

    Best regards! Matías

  • Hi All,

Analytics is a major concern. I run a small business and just need simple bottom line reports, but there is so much data to process.  Most tools I’ve tried are too complex. Any suggestions?

  •  understanding  facebook and how to use its many  features………and at the same time not throwing the baby out with the bathwater..we have the fans!!!  and  want to do the  best thing…

    …..

  • time management! Without question. Balancing how much to spend of social media doing client acquisition, and basic maintenance. And when you get lots of clients, how to keep up with the work without losing traction on SM. It is a balancing act.

  • Building an audience without a doubt.

  • Tracking… is it better to just offer your business information without capturing your visitor’s information or require a visitor to register?  Some teach to always drive traffic to a “capture page” while others teach driving your traffic to good content and if they are interested they can contact you… so what’s your take

  • i go for   bringing them in  with good  content…..i hardly ever  give my info….seems  weird …if im on  your page thats a lot..im  there…thats  your  best  maybe only  chance to  engage me…..why make me jump thru another hoop?  i wouldnt  do it and rather i want to  be tempting, thankfull and welcoming to whoever lands on m y  page, web or whatever……..

actually i  find it pretty  irritating, especially if   im  led to  believe there is something  interesting     …and  then they dont show  you  unless you  register….   also i  hate  buying a book  and   then  read for more info go to my website….

    @bobandkimber

  • Aye just keeping up. Without a doubt keeping up is the biggest challenge I have since the advent of social media and blogging has compounded the need for more and more content has really demanded much more of my time.

  • Thanks, all! @talkfusionassoc: this is a problem a lot of us struggle with. Unfortunately, unless you’re Mark Zuckerberg, chances are you don’t own a social media platform.

I’d recommend leading people to an opt-in email list where you can start to have a more intimate conversation with them that’s less prone to distractions. For FB specifically, try using a 3rd party tool that lets you create custom tabs w/an email sign up, and create a compelling call-to-action / email bait to build your list. On our own blog it’s a free download called “The 11 Biggest Mistake Small Business Bloggers Make” which has an email registration requirement.

@toulavictor Are you using Google Analytics? Although it’s robust, you can focus on just a few important reports to give you insight into how people found your site and their behavior once they got there.

@annfurnivall I’d focus less on understanding everything about FB and just continue engaging your audience (and building your list!)

@jasonwiser Definitely a challenge I struggle with, too! I’m trying to do a better job blocking time out for SM and for NO SM!! Let me know when you discover the secret. ;)

@bobandkimber I think it’s a combination. We post tons of free content for people (and for SEO), provide some content for the “price” of an email newsletter/list building, and still other content we charge money for. It’s about finding that right mix for your business.

    @ptwylie Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose!

Thanks everyone for the responses. I just posted this week’s TOTW, which is on podcasting. Would love your take on it!

  • @rich-brooks hi rich…i  dont  see why   looking for  more  understanding  would  be  unhelpful  ..i like things to make sense……we  have a huge faceboook  thing  going on….  bringing in   lots and lots of   buyers…..  i want to   use every feature  the  best i can….and  not  fall  behind  in any part ……

..being un  curious  would  be wierd….if  that were the case i would still be  doing  snail mail….maybe im missing your point….i liked this thread….

  • thanks Rich for your valuable comments and insights!

  • @annfurnivall

I’m not saying you shouldn’t strive to better understand the tools you’re using…I’m just suggesting to put your focus on engaging your client, NOT on every tool on the swiss army knife.

Unless you’re planning on becoming a Facebook marketer, you should focus on the tools that best help YOU (and your customers), rather than becoming someone who understands how every single tool on FB works. Something that even a Mari Smith or Amy Porterfield would have difficulty keeping up with!

  • GOT IT Rich.thanks……i  dont  care about the app talk or the hootsuit or the buffer stuff…i m not trying to  absorb all that…..its kind of  odd to me that  i have lots  more   fans  than  most of the marketers., so its hard  for me to give up   whats worked  so well for   our  page AND  DEFER  TO THE   GENERAL  VIEW OF THE MARKETERS……..  like   posting   7 socials   and then one   selling…. my selling  post   this morning is   HOT….  45  LIKES  I THINK AND   LOTS OF  COMMENTS….IM  HOPING  FOR A  HIGH  30% CONNECTION  ON  IT…. i am a  happy  camper here and learning lots   !!!  hopefully i  can pay back  and  help  anyone   trying to serve  local type  clients  as  well….or  maybe  you already  know  everything….

..my issues  right now  are  better navigation understanding……melding   pinterest etsy and  facebook in the best way possible for a big project  im  working on……..and  maybe  finding   lots more  advice for local ;users like me…and  upping  my  connections….

  • Turning fans into customers has to be one of my largest challenges. My second largest challenge is keeping up with all the new social networks that come into play. Making sure to focus on my top 3 is easy, but then doing anything on the others that come out can be difficult.

  • Keeping up with it all. Plain and simple. So many netwroks, and they are always changing.

  • I love all these comments. And to some of the concerns above we are building/writing a program to address all of the time management, contact management, 1000+ social media sites concerns. Its going to simplify on line life.

  • Hey, i have gone through all the comments & felt that all the above points are important to be considered.

Well spite of having great content & reputed brand, i feel another biggest challenge for me right now is to increase traffic on our sites.

Do check out my blog here at – http://www.blog@socialappshq.com . I really want to increase my traffic.

  • As Jason said, time management – social media takes up soooo much time. Necessary it maybe but it’s much too time consuming. I also find that there are too many people posting feel good messages on FB and that Twitter is far better, so is Pinterest. I’d be interested in other people’s feedback.

  • To efficiently maintain all my profiles on each and every network. @rich-brooks

  • Oh…and “getting” Google+. [[Eeeeee]]-Elana

  • @elanawinfrey

What do you mean with getting Google + ?!

  • The overall use in regards to implementing Google+ into strategy. It changes frequently, which means that the user demographics change too. One example is Google Pages. All Google Places accounts will be moved over to Google Pages (if the page Admin doesn’t do so first). Then there’s the Hangout, Google+ Teen, Google+ Events, Circles, Messenger…just feels like a lot. Also haven’t been able to find a good mobile App that encompasses all the features. Most users are primarily mobile; including myself. Read an article recently about how most people join briefly then just stop using it due to “confusion.” Made sense. I’ll find the article and post it.

  • Challenge is to weed through the fluff vs those that matter, I wish Google would post a list of the top 25 – 50 most influential (regarding their backlinks & algorithm) properties out there so we can all focus our efforts on the ones that matter…

  • Just reading through all the comments makes me feel so much better already! My major challenge: TIME.In my B2B companies most clients seem to be on Linkedin and to connect with them requires a lot of time and expertise (answering questions – building reputation and branding etc.)

Also – keeping up with the constant changes in the social landscape. For example Google+ … is this a new channel for unique content? Or is it another channel for the same content which can be automated? (after all- not everybody is on every channel.)

But the biggest – super – challenge would be “how to turn readers into clients”. We provide a lot of content on a regular basis and have people that read it. But how can I improve the writing style in such a way that it improves conversion… back to issue nr. 1: time…

Sometimes I just feel I’m going around and around in circles.

  • Here is one of the Google+ articles I read http://mobile.businessweek.com/articles/2012-05-16/is-google-plus-a-ghost-town-and-does-it-matter@chrisloeser…Ditto that!-Elana
