What’s more important: search or social? (TOTW: 7/15/2012) (17 posts)

  • Yikes! I just realized that I didn’t have a new TOTW posted!

In my defense, I was at Comic Con in San Diego helping a friend build awareness for a new video game he’s releasing this fall and taking pictures of people in full costume.

So, a quick question this week: what’s more important to generating business for you…search engine optimization or social media? And why?!?

  • @roguecitrus

    Please put down the cat.

  • I would have to say SEO does more for us right now, but I have been working on that longer than Social Media, so who knows?  I am getting more engagement on my Social Media lines lately, so only time will tell.

  • @rich-brooks Social media has been doing more for us because we’re an association. Still I will be working to add the tags and refreshing content on our website to help the SEO side.
p.s. Extremely envious of your Comic Con journey. My brother was there too (and ThinkGeek and Bad Astronomer and A LOT of people). Bucket list trip for me :)

What panel did you enjoy the most?

  • @kc_kreative

Didn’t do any panels. I can’t imagine waiting in 3 – 12 hour lines to see interviews that will be on YouTube by the time I get home!

My buddy is releasing a game for the iOS and droid later this year, and I was helping him get the word out.

  • @rich-brooks  Been using Social Media most, but am working on the SEO side.  When I get that up to par it will be interesting to compare.  However, I must say that I enjoy the Social Media side a lot more!

And I too and jealous of your chance to got to Comic Con!  My daughter actually WON a trip for 2 a couple years ago and she and my son had an absolutely fantastic time!  They did do a few panels and got author’s signatures on books, etc.  I would love to go!

  • I think SEO is the basis and social media builds on it.

  • SEO for me!

  • I’m sure that most of us will find that a well optimized site is still bringing in more leads than social media. In our case, organic search drives nearly 50% of our traffic and more than 60% of our leads. That said, social media is growing fast and will become a more potent and valuable source because of its interactive nature. Mike and Carl (that’s what their group is called) on LinkedIn are generating fantastic content and I recommend that you check them out.

  • For us it’s definitely SEO and has been for some time, especially for some of our more niche products. We have an amazing SEO specialist. That being said though, social is definitely gaining, especially when we run Facebook based promotions that drive traffic to the website. They truly work hand in hand.

  • we   benefit  from   both  for sure…..but i  guess social is  the  best , since  we have   so many   actual customers  connected with us…. the  facebook   posting   keeps us  connected in a   wonderful and  easy  way….and  they   seem to r eally like it…..we get about  7000  views a week….. or more if the  posts are  better….

i watch the website   for sure…..   we  are normally   in the top 7 or  at least on the  first page  on  google   for our main key  words..[antiques indiana]..so i  dont want   to   fall off  of  there…

i try to keep in mind that the website is  OURS  and  the  facebook isnt…..  but i hope  facebook   stays  so  good  for us  for a long  time…

to me its all intertwined…… and now with pinterest!!! who  knows…

also , for us,   seo is  probably  better  for  finding new   customers   but  facebook is   huge  for  keeping   in touch    with   actual customers….

  • @rich-brooks My brother just started an app gaming business, Order of Magnitude Games. His first was for the iPad only. He is using Facebook mostly and an occasional tweet. Not sure if he’s built any SEO into his site so it’s been low-key marketing for him. I help him out when I can. He was at Comic Con for fun however.

  • SEO is still top dog in my book, with social media mixed in for client contact and feedback.

Social media can work both ways – good for business or bad for business, depending on the feedback.  I have a client that has some pretty bad feedback out there but overall their services are still rated 95% good to best. That 5% however can be found on page one of Google for certain keywords and this can hurt business when those items are found. AND those items are there through social media.

SO I still rank SEO above social media.  Pinterest however, has some fantastic potential and have been trying it out for myself before plunging in for clients.

    .02

  • For me, speaking about traffic, organic search is way more better than social media.

But I have to say that social media is awesome to make nice relationships and is also very good to link with customers.
Obviously this reflects on many aspects behind traffic.

Because of these they are equally important.

  • I’m thinking SEO will be the most important for me as I build. Need to find my “tribe” by having them find me. Then I will work on using social. (At least that’s where I’m headed..only time will tell.)@rich-brooks

  • They both play vital roles in the online mix. For me it’s not one or the other, social has a huge impact on search and search drives users to communities

  • SEO and social media are becoming so intertwined it is sometimes difficult to tell where one begins and the other leaves off!  Either discipline is far less effective on it’s own than it would be as part of a blend of both disciplines working toward the same end result.

Social Media Without SEO Is A Glass Half Full
