TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Social Media FOR Training (5/13/2012) (6 posts)

Topic tags: social media, totw, training
  • Happy Mother’s Day, everyone! Have you checked out Google’s Doodle today? If not, it’s pretty cute.

Anyway, I wanted to talk about training. Not getting trained in social media, but through social media.

Training is part of our jobs and our business. We get trained, we train new employees, and sometimes our customers need training with our products.

I’m wondering if you have been using social media to promote training, support your training, or have any specific ideas on how social media can be used to enhance training.

Also…is there any type of training that wouldn’t be a good fit for social media?

  • @rich-brooks I think G+hangouts lend themselves well to training, especially small groups.

Having worked with companies that had internal social media, some of them used it frequently to announce and promote training. Certainly I have used it to promote paid training in the past.

YouTube offers great training opportunities (potential) and many people leverage that. You can also use SlideShare–that works combined with a conference line.

  • @richbrooksI see a real need to include training in both directions in regards to social media. I am just entering this field and I have used my teaching skills to devise a plan of personal study.  I have an opportunity also do some active work via my job with a non-profit and I reached that point by sharing the information from my own pursuit of knowledge.

I am more pro the idea of people being able to manage their own social media campaigns once they are up and running. I have found that for those folks who are unaware of the importance of social media and their business it is necessary to provide training in an informal way.  But I am also working on developing my own training sessions because it is a skill that I sincerely believe is necessary to develop relationships with other people.

  • For my new business, life coaching, there is a plethora of training online. Many “experts” have teaser videos that have great content but also entice one to purchase the whole enchilada. Two such trainers have offered a scholarship contest where the applicant makes a video and posts it to youtube and puts the link on the contest page. For extra measure, posting the contest on fb and twitter up to three times a day will get extra kudos….building the SEO. (smart cookies, pun intended) @rich-brooks

  • @rich-brooks  Rich, we use social media to do all three, promote, support, and enhance training.

Being in the retail motorcycle business, I believe it is our responsibility to spread the word that safety training is vital for new riders as well as those coming back to the sport. Social media has been effective in promoting that safety message.

We advertise on social media to support our training efforts by offering to pay tuition for customers to participate in any of the beginner or advanced Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses, throughout the USA.

We use social media to enhance our training efforts by writing and publishing motorcycle safety articles.  I feel that safety training should be both mandatory and free of charge.  Social media is helping us to achieve that goal.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani: Slideshare! Hadn’t thought of that. Good one!
