Small Biz Club is 1 Year Old! What’s Next? (TOTW: 12.2.12) (21 posts)

  • Yes, it’s true. The Social Media Examiner Clubs turn one this week!

As we look forward to the coming year, what would YOU like to see in the Small Business club, or in the clubs in general to make this next year even better?

How can we make these clubs more valuable for you?

  • Hi @Rich-brooks,

    Kudos to the SME Clubs!

Great topic for the crowd out there. Here is one idea that might help:

Badges: imho showing new leads, potential and actual clients coming into my blog/site that I have built a valuable presence in SME Clubs would be valuable. It would also allow me to give something back to SME bringing new members into the clubs.

Who’s up to badges? Please let me know your opinions.

    Thanks!
    Max.

  • @rich-brooks It does seem amazing that it’s only been a year. The SME community turned into a valuable resource.

To maket the year even better, I would love to see a better categorization system so we could all easily search by a topic. Then actually we could be one big club, as most of us really seem to cover all the topics at one time or another.

Continued policing of overly salesy messages.

I am not sure how we’d do it, but perhaps some open forum style calls, probably limited to small groups on a specific topic.

A monthly summary of the most active topics and/or posts, sent via email with links to the threads. Many people want to respond or read topics, but if you’re busy, you have to prioritize.  I’ve learned that I can spend hours in the clubs if I am not careful, so I only jump in if a topic or post is timely, or I have 10 minutes to devote to something I feel is very important. But many topics interest me, and I’d like to see an easy to follow summary somehow.

  • Good idea about the summary — @joanmuschampfagnani

Hello  @rich-brooks —  I’d like to see better opportunities for members as a direct result of being a member in good standing. It’s well and good to have special guest “speakers” that stand out in any industry.  I’ve found that to be a big plus of the membership here.  But other than that, how do the members stand out themselves? You have to spend a lot of time here, give good advice and be very active to garner attention.  Yes, I know, the LeaderBoard is a part of being active and having your posts ‘liked’ however, it does not provide the ‘trust’ factor that people seem to need to actually want to hire anyone for their services.

I’ve reached out to several folks and have offered help to them; to swap service for service, etc., offered deep discounts when I see a need that I know I can fill, offered to take payments for what could positively impact their business, to no avail.  How do you prove your trustworthiness other than give good advice? I try to be pleasant and understanding and help where I feel I can.  Is it just me; does anyone else have the same take on this?

Congratulations on a great first year, BTW, and hope you have many more successful years with this endeavor.

  • Hi @joanmuschampfagnani  and @Supereb,
I really liked your suggestions! Everything that acts in favor of the clubs’ transparency is positive.
@Supereb, I particularly think that good advice is the best way to build authority. It does take time but it would be a balance between what you do here and on your personal blog/site. As on any networking site you need to set your goals, otherwise you can spend 24 hours a day diving into them.
(cc: @Rich-brooks) What about having a space on profiles to integrate testimonials from a client that any service provider was able to get from the SME Clubs? A testimonial for a good service could help earning more points. A bad testimonial would mean losing points. The one that provides testimonial also earn points.
The fact of losing points because of rule breaking or bad service would help. It has to cost something. Google bans your blog, then SME makes you lose points.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani I like your ideas. I still advocate for a Twitter sub-Club since that’s my forte. @rich-brooks The year has certainly flown by and this forum has been valuable to me in friendships and information.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani I like your ideas too.  You sort of covered what I would like to see too.

  • woo-hoo! 1 year old. What a great place it’s been.
”many topics interest me, and I’d like to see an easy to follow summary somehow.” ~ @joanmuschampfagnani

    I like this idea.

  • @supereb I like your comments. Congratulations on reaching 1 year. I have only been here a short while, though. I would like to know more about Internet Marketing.

  • congrats!!!   i have  learned so much here and  appreciate the   feedback on   lotsof  my posts…..love the guest experts,…. how about  getting   some  real world users   on?  like   A RESTURANT WITH 2000 FANS  WHO LOVES FACEBOOK???   that would  be neat,,,, and  could  be   verly insightful…they could  tell how they did it…..

…  i  would like  more  real stories, real  business  campaigns, real  client stories,    and like  deeper  convos and fewer  links…. i like it when  we hear about the  background  of  different   views  …i would  reATHER HEAR THE MEMBERS   in their own words   than  links to their  place or  another  social media place….also hoping for more  real world   members….like the  golf course  woman or the   woman  sellling the combines on you tube!!  that was  so interesting….

its  kind of  easy to pick up the   big  general  theories……how things   really worked out in the marketkplace is what i care about the most..

  • @supereb i found  your comments interesting…to me it seems like most of   the members here  are in the same  business IN  GENERAL… or  just  starting out and not looking to hire anyone…so either way   very unlikely to  hire  each other….for finding   business wouldnt  you do  better on a forum  full of  small businesses   in  businesses  outside the  social media world?

i look at this  great place as a place  for  education….where  you  could  talk about  seo  with a peer…or i  could  talk  about   social media  for   brick and mortar w ith someone  with clients in that  field….or  get  good  tekk advice and maybe  give the  view  from the  real world   client  if anyone ever wanted  that…

  • Hi @annfurnivall

I did not mean to come off as though I was looking for work here. The very few (3 altogether) people I have approached (in the year [almost] I’ve been here) had some very serious issues with their websites or business endeavors. I just wanted to help them as I knew exactly what steps to take to further their biz acumen and garner a lot more traffic.

I am not here looking for business, at all.  I know what these forums are for and appreciate that approaching anyone with the idea of ‘solicitation’ is not a good idea, in general.  I was surprised however, at the response I received from one member and no responses from the other two.  Those two people became very standoff-ish too, where I thought I was building solid relationships.

It’s too bad with being here all this time, that people do not trust that you are trying to HELP. However, I cannot put in the kind of hours it would take to actually train someone to do their own SEO, that simply does not happen that easily as there are too many variables to consider.  So offering to do the work for a pittance compared to my actual rate was a gift offering. I can’t put it any plainer than that. A simple “no thanks” would have sufficed.

On the other hand tons of people have approached me for FREE advice in private here (dozens actually) and that gets very tiring indeed.  I’ve finally started telling them to ask a question in the public area if they wanted a response. I do it politely and always respond to the requests.

The very reason I like it here is that plenty of the people have a lot of knowledge in areas that I may not know all I might need to know – sharing and learning is the goal, all the way around.  It is what I have appreciated all along. The web is still evolving and to keep up we need more places like this one to help us stay sharp.

This is certainly not the only forums I scan each day, this is for social media – I tend to spend more time with programmers in other forums.

    Eileen :D

  • i try to get on  places on line   where   potential  customers  gather….to me thats   a good thing./good marketing….  if  you  can   get them to  make the  first  step…im  always looking  for more places  where that  works  for  our  business…

. i just wouldnt think   here would be  a good place to   find   social media  jobs..even  tho  lots   of  members   would like that to happen…naturally….

i hear  you on  free  advice, i  get that in the store a lot…which is ok  since they are in the store…. usually about my paint job  or what their antique is worth….

    @supereb

  • Congratulations SME! I love this place! Since I work at home, it’s nice to have a “water cooler” to take a break at during the day.

  • @rich-brooks @maximiliano-garcia @kc_kreative @dianebianchi @mholandez @ron-ashworth @annfurnivall @supereb @amyhallbiz

I just thought I would include everyone in this reply and here are my thoughts:

    1. SME has saved me so much time and provided me with great information. You folks have helped me determine what direction I am taking with a project I am working on.
    2. Thanks to the folks (many of you above) that post frequently because I do read your comments and have learned a great deal.  Thanks, thanks!
    3. I am more interested in the Small Business Club and feel that a lot of the forum covers areas that  fall in the other Clubs.
    4. I have not had anyone try and sell me anything, but I did have one person tell me that one of my sites needed work.  I thought that was a bit tacky as it was a direct message after I requested that they become my Friend.
    5. I have reached out to a Member about their services and fees.  I would hope that Members would inquire about another Member’s services.  I agree it should be the Buyer making the inquiry.
    6. Some of you really go out of your way to help others and I think any recognition you get it is well deserved.
    Steve

  • Thanks for the update.

  • @stevecurran Good summary Steve.

  • @stevecurran The SME clubs are the bomb, aren’t they? :)

  • Thank you SME, it’s a great place for me hear, learn and be up to date. Probably, if you want to add or change something here, I can suggest to create more clubs, with more specific topics, small business is very general and i can feel that almost all the time the conversations are about technical issues. (it’s just my feeling) But what it is SME right now is perfect!!! Thank you every body for this great 1st year!!

  • More I would like to see on the SME clubs:

    - Post an update on my Twitter or Facebook account (depending with which one I have signed in) every time I contribute to a topic.
    - Less or no points for making friends. I see people abusing of this for reaching a better score, and you have already take it down from 5 to 2 points, right?
    - Extra points for mentions and +1 on your contributions.
    - Rest points for -1 on your contributions.
    - On the “Points” section, show how many points do I need to reach the next level on my score. That would make it more transparent and motivating I think.

@rich-brooks Are you going to publish/notify the resolutions here at the Clubs?

  • Congratulalitons!!!I agree with that; i  would like  more  real stories, real  business  campaigns, real  client stories, It will make virtual world more real, and those best practice will give force to this forum. Also Thanks your guys help!
