How do you use content to generate business? (TOTW: 2.11.2013) (9 posts)

  • With Social Media Examiner’s Content Success Summit off to a grand start, I have had content on my mind lately.

“Content Marketing” was one of the big buzz words of 2012, and it looks to continue strong into 2013.
However, a lot of people don’t understand how to turn content into revenue.
I actually have a model called the Content Marketing Pyramid…it goes like this:

    • Free content (attracts new prospects)
    • Opt-in content (gets people to share contact info)
    • Paid content (gets people to buy pre-packaged content from you, i.e., ebook or online course)
    • Customized content (consulting or similar services.)
Do you have content for all of these levels? Do you have a plan to move people from one level to the next?

  • im  brick and mortar…so probably   different  from  your pyramid..my  goal is to get them to the store…. ..but  i start with  trying to understand  what my   customers like….and  show  a lot of that…

my  best posts are albums of   great stuff…in their eyes…i just posted an album showing  our  best oak  furniture and  got  90 likes and lots of  comments and  one  direct  600$  sale  and  several  good  comments about  future  visits….   this out of  4500  fans……..

im  really getting  bugged  by   what  you might  call custom  content….  people  seeing a picture and wanting me to measure it or tell them the price… i post in the morning at home without  the prices in front of me….. or  email them  closeups…….. im  not set up for that much work everyday..its not  really what i want to offer….  … especially on  20$$ items….but  they  expect it  becasue  so many  companies do it…like  zappos  can  show  you   5  views of the same shoe in seconds…. thats not  what we can do…

im  trying to   find a  pleasant way to tlell them   we dont offer  everything they want….

  • I like your pyramid, @rich-brooks.  It makes it easier to put together a plan.  Thanks!

  • @dianebianchi

Thanks! I actually created a post on it (level one ;) ) if you’re interested: http://www.themarketingagents.com/content-marketing-pyramid

  • Thanks, @rich-brooks.  I’ll check it out! :)

  • That is a helpful and functional way of looking at content, Rich. Thank you.

I would add at least one more category: Educational.

After attracting a potential customer — and before trying to sell them something, or even capture their contact information — they need to be educated about What I have and Why it is important … once the need is established, I can show them How to take the next step.

  • @rich-brooks I don’t have any paid content. I’m sorely lacking there. It’s on my list of ToDo’s to gt done by March.  But the way this year is flying by ….

  • Good one @Rich-Brooks and one for me to really look at as I focus on connecting with conference organizers as well as conference participants.

  • Because our focus is eCommerce, we deploy a weekly informational newsletter (on bird & parrot care). The email will have links & banners to products and landing pages.
I migrate the HTML of the (Mailchimp) newsletter to our blog. I am now posting a link to the blog post with a related image on our fan page. Some of our blog posts begin as Facebook comments.
which leads me to an ancillary question for @Amy Hall – WordPress Assistant & MailChimp Expert
I just hooked up the “Socialapp” plugin for mailchimp. Now that I know the x subscribers are facebook fans, Twitter followers and so forth what would the “best practices” be for using these metrics? – Thanx
