Getting More Twitter Followers (TOTW, 1/22/2012) (25 posts)

  • Yikes! Did I really just get to posting this week’s TOTW?!? Shame on me.

Let’s make it an easy one then.

What are your techniques for getting more Twitter followers? Are you a team follow-back type of person? Avid hash-tagger? Use any 3rd party software to find people? Link to your Twitter account from your site?

Oh, and even though your Twitter handle is visible elsewhere, please “sign” these responses with your Twitter URL so we can quickly find you!

  • @rich-brooks As yet, I am  following leaders in the space, re-tweeting good articles, and tweeting things I find useful (mostly) which ar usually links to another article. Once I have my blog launched, I will do more with comments and linking.

I don’t view it as looking to amass large numbers–looking for quality, so I look at who follows me before I randomly follow back.

  • Im not so much a follow-for-follow tweeter. I tend to follow people and then either keep them or unfollow them depending on how interactive and interested I find I am with their tweets and links, over a period of time. Im more quality over quantity in all aspects.

And I mostly tweet out links related to social media crises, tips and opinions on current crises that followers can benefit and learn from.

    @smcrisisacademy is me!

    Great question!

  • @rich-brooks Bonjour Rich!

You pretty much summarized the techniques I use, as I like to tweet and retweet using relevant hashtags. My favorites themes: travel, marketing, mobile, customer service, loyalty, social media.

I tend to follow folks who tweet along these themes. Before following though, I make sure there is a picture & bio in the profile, it’s a pet peeve of mine when neither are there…

    Cheers,

  • Like @joanmuschampfagnani and @Melissaagnes I am less about the numbers and more about the quality. Even above that I look for consistent discussions on topics of interest.

At the Reading Tub I have two personas, @readingtub tweets literacy and reading-related /educational stuff, and @thereadingtub is book reviews, news, and author info. Keeps things a little neater. If there’s something that crosses over I have streams for relevant hashtags on Hootsuite so I can cross-post with ease.

On a semi-related note, I’m looking at Google+ to have broader discussions on topics and follow people that don’t fit the literacy/reading parameters.

  • @rich-brooks I learned from volunteering with Social Media For Nonprofits (@SM4NP) that you follow the influencers’ followers. It was a marketing tactic for spreading the word about the conference but I have applied it for my personal use as well.
@joanmuschampfagnani I also like to retweet (and comment) popular topics. I strike up conversations and attend TweetChats too. This week I was chatting with someone at WTOP about singing in the shower :) and another series was about the DC Auto Show (we’re now following each other). Quality over quantity is right. I police my followers as best I can to keep the spammers out (or accounts that don’t fit my vibe).

  • @rich-brooks I started getting more followers AND more interesting conversations after I created a Twitter landing page (http://avapss.net/Twitter.aspx) as part of my profile. This tells people why I am on Twitter, who/why I follow, topics of interest, and what I share.

  • @rich-brooks  Greetings, all.  I am still a Twitter infant but slowly learning this “social media”.  After someone follows me I watch their tweets and who they follow to see if it meets with my values and morals.  My business is named after my Momma and I use her pic as my logo.  So if anything would embarrass me, I know it would do the same to Momma is she was still here.  So I look for quality over quantity.  Followers with quality tweets and content helps me with the bottom line.  Just my 2 cents worth.  I do the same with Facebook.  Peace, Robert.

  • @debbielynnava I like that landing page idea! Thanks fr sharing.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani People are too unique and have too many good qualities to squeeze everything into a 160 character profile.

  • @kc_kreative

Although I think I know the answer, could you expand more on why following the influencer’s followers is a good tactic?

    Thanks!

  • @rich-brooks After following the influencer, take a peak into their follower list. Then select active and relevant accounts to follow. More than likely, these individuals and organizations will follow you back, esp. if you have a solid profile and decent tweet stream.

This method works the best when you are doing it in your chosen field(s) vs. randomly. I followed nonprofits, associations and marketing-related folks. My tweets are in this realm as well (with weather and horses thrown in for good measure). I gained a number of followers by adding people from the SM4NP conference speakers’ follower lists, such as Beth Kanter, Peter Corbett, Katya Andresen, Michael Smith, etc.

    Does that help?

  • @rich-brooks @joanmuschampfagnani @melissaagnes i usually use hastag and follow who are constantly sharing knowledge, but not with spammy tricks! Also i retweet their tweets and mention them with thank you note so that they can know that i am following, retweeting and thanking them and thus they follow me back! :)

  • @melissaagnes I took like to retweet to worthy causes such as the Somaly Mam foundation and theJustice for Mumia Abu Jamal association. We should all use these powerful technologies for the good of all.

  • I do not follow everyone who follows me. I also check the profile, photo and web site, if present.I occasionally use hash tags.Quality vs quantity. What strategy have you found to be most effective in engaging your target market? My initial interest and focus with Twitter has been travel but in time that has expanded.

  • I have two twitter accounts.  @roundpeg which was my original account.   I typically follow any real person who follows me.  As my company has grown, i transferred this account to a company account and started using @lorraineball for personal use.  This account only has a few hundred followers, about 5% of @roundpeg, but has a higher klout score, because of the engagement,

Lots of people follow you, it doesn’t matter, unless they notice you.

  • Great topic and some good ideas for someone fairly new to Twitter and am looking forward to hitting that 300 mark this week.  I have been more concerned with quality over quantity and have not set up my blog yet so its fine for now. Honestly, I am enjoying the good info coming through twitter stream.
@kc_kreative good advice about following influencers. I have sort of taken this approach without really formalizing the process. i.e. I don’ t always confirm who the influencers are but if I find their content to be interesting and relevant I may look at the profiles of a few of their followers to see what that brings. @debbielynnava Great idea to have a landing page. Love that you state you are rarely on twitter during the weekend. ;)
@readingtub I too am really liking Google+ for deeper content. I look forward to watching this evolve from the SMB perspective.

  • How did you make the landing page for your twitter acct? @debbielynnavaI have my blog post auto send the short link to my twitter acct. I did find leaders in my interest field and follow them and their followers. However, I don’t read any tweets (sorry, I know, bad girl)  @travelwitheva @lisagrover @lorraineball @fredericgonzalo @robertbaker @rich-brooks

  • @lisagrover The weekend is the best time for some people to tweet–and the best time for me to be unplugged and pursuing other interests.

@deairby I created a separate page on my Web site and then posted its URL (instead of my home page) in my Twitter profile.

  • thanks @debbielynnava

  • I set a modest goal to increase Twitter followers at the beginning of 2012–grow by 5% each month. I had few followers. By finding and following influencers, retweeting valuable posts, and creating others from good business info I found, I actually increased followers the first month by 48%! (time to adjust my goal).

    @deairby @debbielynnava @lisagrover @lorraineball @rich-brooks @travelwitheva @moinshaikh @durkbarton @kc_kreative @readingtub @melissaagnes I just read this article by Heidi Cohen http://heidicohen.com/twitter-make-every-tweet-count-research/

She touches on a lot of what we’ve discussed here, but adds a few more ideas

  • @joanmuschampfagnaniThanks for sharing!

  • I just started really getting into Twitter again since the FBSS11 conference and now can really see it working for me. Am getting a steady trickle of new leads and customers from Twitter these days. I love using Twitter in real time for conferences and events. Today was fun! I have three accounts but am active only in one:

    http://www.twitter.com/supportawahp.

    I use the hashtags #iwahp (for next week’s celebrations) #workathome #entrepreneur #socialmedia and #womeninbusiness.

  • @Rich-Brooks when I do take time to gain more followers on Twitter, I use the following strategies to locate meaningful connections.

    1) I look to see who in my LinkedIn network is on Twitter and then follow.2) I follow people who are in organizations that I am a member of.3) Twellow.com is a great resource to drill down and search by a specific demographic.4) I watch the #FF (Follow Friday) that people in my Twitter network suggest. I peek at their profile and then decide whether to follow or not.5) I added the Tweets to Pages app (see my video on how: http://youtu.be/w62CpS2Kw78 ) to my Facebook business page.6) I strategically use Twitter hashtags to gain visibility.

While I know that Twitter search is another source, I haven’t used it very much. Time is always my issue, so I look for the quickest routes that will lead me people I would want to follow.

I believe that building a quality Twitter network is important. You want people who are your advocates and vice versa.

    • Retweeting and use @ mentions
    • sending daily #ff
    •  linking from my blog to twitter
    •  importing my tweets  to facebook
    • created with paperli Electronic music and Kleckerlabor Daily News
