To Klout or not to Klout? That is the question. (12 posts)

  • How much Clout do you give Klout? Do you let the numbers affect your social media strategy? Do you use the +K feature? Pros and cons from your personal experiences.

  • I don’t give much clout to Klout. It’s essentially a game at this point. It doesn’t factor in all your social media channels in scoring at all. People should definitely not take it seriously. Use it for the Perks to get some free stuff…otherwise I give it no weight and neither do serious clients.

  • @jasonwiser On the lists of things I am paying attention to and putting on my to do list… welll it isn’t making it on to any lists for me!

  • What if I told you that Klout.com has an Alexa rank of 858 and you can add a link to your profile that is not “no follow”? That is the only reason I use Klout :)

  • I will be totally honest, I do not think Klout is very credible. Potential? Yes, absolutely, the idea is great. However, the topics I am influential in change daily and almost never represent anything I actually talk about in much detail.

  • @jasonwiser I somehow miss the point of Klout. I joined it some while ago, started to follow some best practices, but found myself only looking at the Klout level to rise. At a certain point I realized that it does not really help me with anything, nor does it lead me to a sustainable growth in knowledge or professionalism - and that is what I need from any tool.

  • @jasonwiser Definitely just a sidetracking diversionary game not to get hooked on. Just like that Empire building game… now that’s a weird piece of work. I signed up for both just to take a peekaboo, but neither are worth spending your precious time on and I would definitely not try to convince a business that it’s worth their time. Fun maybe, but not anything that’s going anywhere.

Hey, things are happening so fast in social media and internet marketing… I mean SMS messaging and mobile websites were all the rage for new stuff to promote for businesses in January 2011, now we’re seeing the costly nature of that beast bow down to the new boys on the block — mobile apps and PUSH notifications. With all the new profit-alligned toys coming on the scene every day, I recommend not getting hooked into too many diversionary adventures that look kinda cool, kinda fun, but offer no ROI at all.

    Just my thinking…

  • @jasonwiser I was into Klout for awhile until I found out that they scraped my accounts. I have since disconnected my Facebook account, which was mostly private, and haven’t logged in since. I also use My Web Career but haven’t logged in awhile either. Both are more of analytic tools to me.

  • The concept of these influence measurement tools is a nice idea, but there’s flaws and imperfections at this point. Better than nothing? Sure. But I think there’s an unhealthy obsession that some people have over them to the point that they think it’s a measure of their worth. The last time Klout did a big change to its algorithm, I thought some people were going to take to the streets in anger. Then we had people who had to write columns like, “Don’t have as much Klout as you thought, huh?” Great. Thanks for that. Seriously, the only good thing I ever got from Klout was a free blanket for my dog. So I was happy to help out my best friend. My clients? They could care less.

One tool that’s not perfect but at least factors in offline behavior is Kred. Overall, I think we’ll see better evolutions of these tools – I just hope people don’t wrap up their entire self-worth around one number. That’s not healthy.

  • To me Klout is no different than the BBB. It can be gamed and your rankings can be bought..

  • If it were not for the backlink… For the longest time it said I was influential about clothing. Oh my wife had a lot of fun with this. If you saw my wardrobe you would understand…

Here is on of my favorite Klout article. Pam really nails it here. http://www.pammarketingnut.com/2011/11/why-i-deleted-my-klout-profile/

  • A new thread has been opened asking the same question. Go and see the answers here also. Great discussion.
