tips for avoiding occupational hazards (10 posts)

  • With a focus on the internet comes an excessive amount of time sitting at a desk in front of the computer, unless you use your iphone or laptop in a hammock. What are you doing to protect yourself from eye strain, back pain, carpal tunnel, or “secretarial spread?” (sorry about that last reference, secretaries)

Do you have the room lights bright or screen on dim or the reverse?

Are you using an ergonomically designed chair?

Does your mouse pad have a wrist support?

Are you working out with P90X?

What are your tips to a healthy, hazard-free existence? What other hazards are you guarding against?

  • I don’t know how you all do it. Love, love, love being a florist! It’s such a mix of duties. I can be scrubbing buckets in the morning, processing flowers, designing, billing and paperwork, visiting and helping customers, photographing and editing pics of arrangements and then messing up the website or posting on fb. I know this sounds sappy but when a customer comes in following the funeral of his/her loved one and tells you how much the flowers exceeded their expectations, I pretty much stand there and cry too.  It’s a poor mans job but the rewards are worth millions.

Sorry to get a little off subject Dea, I guess my answer is to change tasks often lol

  • Triathlon training with the best training partner on earth, plus a pretty disciplined writing and networking schedule keeps me healthy, fit, and hazard free! I do need new glasses though — lol.

Jenifer I love what you said and think it’s absolutely ON subject because it addresses the creativity and mental energy that we all bring to our work. Key to staying hazard free IMHO.

  • I have almost always been a company man, so being a self-employed consultant, working from home for the past two months, well… I try to get up at least once per hour to stretch, not be behind my computer or looking at my iPhone, and vary the chores: make some calls, find any excuse to have lunch with a friend, client, potential client, etc.

At least once a week, I make it a requirement to go outside to a lunch conference, seminar or network at an event, so that I have a balance between offline and online worlds. Or else it gets too easy to get sucked into the virtual world… ;-)

  • I work out 5 days a week. I move around a lot at the office and go out to do business errands every day to. I also have a back support on my chair.

  • @deairby

After hearing about how sitting all day is the most dangerous thing for your health, I upgraded to a standing platform that goes up and down so I can sit or stand during the day.

    Here’s a pic: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151257848360641&set=a.391038610640.354907.26696935640&type=1

The ability to shift between sitting and standing is nice, but if I were to do it again I’d just get a standing desk and a tall task chair.

  • That’s way too cool! Thanks for sharing. @rich-brooks

  • @deairby I keep hydrated–and my office is upsatirs, so I keep running up & down for more water (we filter our water; I won’t drink straight from the tap). I also walk the dog on a break.  but by far the most important is going to yoga, at least 3-5 times a week. I happen to go to Bikram (hot room) yoga now, and find it really helps.

    @rich-brooks  That does look interesting.

  • A friend shared this just last week:”How Sitting All Day Is Damaging Your Body And How You Can Counteract It.”

  • Awesome, Debbie! Thanks.@debbielynnava
