Time in a bottle? (12 posts)

  • Jim Croce couldn’t do it and you can’t either. No one can save time. We either use it or lose it. Is there a way efficiently to use time wearing all seven hats the “solopreneur” must wear?Help!!SMM and SEO take so much time, how do YOU do it?

  • im not solo,  but i  sure have  tried a lot….and my  rule  is to dro p the stuff that  doesnt  bring in money…  that leaves me with pinterest, facebook,  monthly emails, replying to  all the  facebook inquiries, and  putting something new on  the website every month .[the website and  emails i  plan  but  have my tekk person do]…and  staying active on  2 or 3 places  where  likely customers  might  gather… and  keeping up to date  on here and the  few   gurus i follow….that  seems like a  full load  !!!lol

so i have dropped  many things or never  picked them up… i have to do it all in the hour  before work…at work i  do  take   the pictures i use in all the   media…at  the storei  get an earful about my social media….if  something  doesnt work  for us i  cant  justify   the time and effort…so i kick it to the  kurb..some of the thiingsive tried  and  dropped  are ..yelp,google plus, blog[for 3 yrs],a ning or 2,,online selling..

.i do  judge by the  money…

but i  want to  give  everything a chance…in the wings for me  is …instagram, twitter, and  you tube..maybe a free ebook….

  • HI  @jimpalmer

Organizing time is the hardest thing for most solo-preneurs to get a handle on.

SEO still begins with the flagship website. Get that in a good position and then add SMM to further push the website to a better position, when that is possible. The thing is, it is not always possible to have SMM helping when you have national branded companies above you for specific keywords.

I use chrome and have all the social media icons lined up on the custom link bar. I go from one to the next and check for communications – this site is among them. I spend more time in forums for programmers (but that is another subject).

When article surfing I always tweet and G+ those through a chrome add-on for for any particular items of interest (Pinterest too, when appropriate) and on FB only particular types of things.  FB is not a place that works for me much as I sell only services now and FB is mostly for family (for me).   Twitter and G+ seem to be better places for my type of biz.

I run through those icons a few times a day and spend about an hour each time. SO about 3 hours a day, but sometimes less.

    Eileen :D

  • Hey Jim, love Jim Croce!

I guess it depends on where you are in your business.

When starting out I only focus on 4 things.

    1. Creating a product or service of value
    2. Creating a FREE offer that helps people get a result (Opt-ins)
    4. Driving Traffic to the page or site
    5. Conversions

Once #1 is done and the testing on #2 and #5 are good – my major time is spent on traffic and follow up.

Once you have a system that works, and you stay focused, only doing the necessary tasks that step you closer to your goals – IT’S EASY! LOL :)

We both know that’s a bunch of WHOOEY!

But I will say… get a plan or create a plan, then focus on those 3 or 4 activities. Then make small adjustments along the way until you get the results you want.

When I first started out I tasted a bit of everything and accomplished nothing.

I jumped from writing articles to Twitter, then over to Facebook, then seo, then Linkedin, then a new product, and NEVER stayed focused on anything long enough to get a result.

    I was everywhere, but nowhere.

  • I’ve focused on blogging for two years and am starting to build an impressive audience. I’m experimenting with Twitter.

I have spent a lot of time learning Facebook but it seems ephemeral to me. I’m never sure if I what I work on today will have any value tomorrow.
I tried Pinterest but it doesn’t work with my browser of choice (which some of my other activities prefer). I have to switch browsers to use it . . . which is a barrier.

I’d rather devote my learning curve to improving content than to switching strategies with each new platform.

Having a good blog with quality content and using Twitter to expand reach is my current strategy.

  • Thanks to one and all. I hope my question leads to two new friends, @annatgreenoak and @GlenAndrews. The others know I’m no whiz at Social Media, just a DOS dinosaur adapting to life in a windows world, and now they say that is passing away too.You have been helpful and I thank you. :-)

  • @jimpalmer I’m not a solopreneur though will consult on the side of my FT gig. To manage both, I use social media tools and selectively choose events for in-person networking. And on Saturdays, I usually disconnect (somewhat) from my digital channels to make sure I stay fresh during the week.

    I like @glenandrews thoughts too!

  • @jimpalmer

Lots of great answers here. The two places one spends a lot of time in SEO and SMO is content creation and falling down the rabbit hole clicking through interesting links on Facebook, YouTube, etc., rather than doing professional networking.

For content creation, I schedule time in my day…otherwise other “urgent” things get in my way.

For the rabbit hole problem, I try to focus brief bursts of time on FB or Twitter, rather than just clicking around.

    Hope this helps!

  • and that is why I asked the question. @rich-brooks knows that when you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there. This rabbit-hole of virtual reality consumes us. Rich, I will try the scheduled time, but with so much interesting stuff, it gets hard.Seize the day and squeeze!!Jim

  • love the rabbit hole   idea!!!   mine is  part business realated and  part  news and   part eyecandy… a couple of hrs in the morning like on here and and  on my lap at night while doing   tv with dh….but at work i have to work… and i never get it all done out there…work/income  has to be first…i would not  want to  be paying a  service  provider  for  rabbit hole time!!!lol

but on my day off  time  can  fly on the computer and   its  so nice…

  • @jimpalmer Yup Love the song, I would like to see time in a bottle.
I love when people say if I had more time, I don’t know about you, but ever sense I learned how to tell time there have been24 hours in a day, no more, no less.
Like you I started in DOS and went from there, windows 3.1, windows 95 now we were cooking with gas ( expression ) well it’s been going from there.
I still don’t have any more time than I used to have, 24 hours are still enough for me what I can’t do today it can wait till tomorrow.
I waste time online when I should be working towards a goal, but it’s more fun on sites like this. Maybe I should learn to keep my BIG mouth shut but the conversation are to interesting. I do get points for these comments and it sometimes gives me great ideas for blog posts for my blog, so I keep reading.
I have a goal to be working online next year and leave my driving job for the younger crowd, the years are creeping up and my body is starting to say EASY BOY I’m not twenty any more.
I like to fish and that is where I want to spend more time (if I have more time ) ha ha. I see so many people driving like crazy to make up time but once it’s gone you can’t get it back. So take some time and do whats important and leave the unimportant for later when your time allows.

    Take care.

  • I know just what you mean, @edwin. The crazy way we all drive just to jam up and wait. We did not save any time, we just got there when we got there and then wasted what we thought we had saved. You mentioned fishing, and I too thought I enjoyed itHowever, since I did not catch many fish, I decided I did not have the time to waste, so I devoted my time to the ‘goal’ of golf. Maybe some day I will have enough time to waste golfing and fishing. I’mstill  pretty sure I would rather be a ‘catcherman’ than a fisherman!  :-)Seize the day and SQUEEZE until it hollers uncle.
