The Demographics of Social Media Users (5 posts)

  • A recent Pew Internet & American Life Study focused on the Demographics of Social Media Users in late 2012.

    No huge surprises:

    • Users under 50 were more likely to use social media sites
    • Ages 18 – 29 were most like to use social media sites
    • Women used them more than men
    • More usage in urban areas than rural (or maybe this is surprising…after all, there are a lot more people to be social with in an urban setting)
I did notice that race didn’t seem to make a big difference in usage levels…in fact, Hispanic Americans had the highest usage (slightly) w/72%.
I was also a little surprised to see that households with incomes under $30K (lowest segment in survey) were the most likely to be using social media sites.
This goes against what some of flyte’s clients who work with low income families are telling us.
    Did you find any surprises?

  • nice info…….but then  you plug it into your world….

…. that  20 yr olds   use it a lot isnt   relevant for me [or suprising]  ….my target  market is women homeowners  age 30 to 60…

…. that  low income   are using it isnt relevant to me  ….they probably cant  be my customers….

I believe there was additional info broken down by social platform, but I can’t remember if Pinterest was one (which I know is your platform of choice.)

  • HI @rich-brooks

Interesting to find there are more creators than curators.  I would have expected those numbers to be reversed.  I also would have thought that by now, there would be more rural areas represented in overall numbers.

I think plenty of people (the creators) find a way to release the ‘art’ they create and thus feel some release of the pressure to create and be understood through their art.

No study is definitive but this one is really pretty good.

  • I LOOK AT PINTEREST  as a fun little  side thing….  for sure….and  how i t  relates to sales  is  not   clear to me at all…i have  lots of  fans  who   are far away  and not exactly   potential customers…but we are probably in the same  cultural  stream,,so thats  good….   marketing  isnt   the whole point for me on pinterest…like it it is on  facebook .and its just a baby with   who knows  what potential!!!!… @rich-brooks
