The base ingredients for a social media plan? (8 posts)

  • All of my clients are on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Some have other ingredients mixed in. Please share with me if you think I should add anything to the “base ingredients” – should I include Google+? Is there some other critical platform I should explore and know? All advice is GREATLY appreciated!

  • @mich the most important platforms to consider for your clients are the ones where their specific audience is hanging out.

As far as Google+ goes, I am still on the fence with this one as I mentioned in the Google+ for business thread, however, I have heard a few great arguments as to why businesses should be on it; the biggest one being for search ranking as well as Google+ ability to integrate other Google products such as screen sharing of documents, Google Places, etc. Another important thing to remember is there is no reason to send your audience there unless there is a reason. Always be providing quality content and engaging.

BTW, here’s the link to the video on G+ business pages I showed in the webinar last week: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHYCfBKB8XA&feature=channel_video_title

  • totally agree with @rich-brooks
@mich I use Google+ because of the search ranking and because my favorite Chris Brogan is hanging out there. LOL!
But seriously speaking, I’m glad you know where your clients are. I suggest you to   focus on those 3 platforms first since they are already there. Engage with them. listen to them and provide value to them. That’s all you need to focus on.
Only consider new platform IF and only IF your target audience are already using it. There’s no reason for you to hangout on the ”next big thing” if your the only one using it. Again don’t focus on the ”media” part focus on the ”social” part.
    I hope that helps! :)

  • @Valerie Joy Deveza – thank you!

  • @rich-brooks, @Valeriejoydeveza – I agree the first key is to know where your audience is, and don’t waste precious time just because it’s popular.

I think too many small businesses try to be everywhere, instead of ensuring quality messaging in the right places.

  • @mich I agree with the above comments. I’m also wondering why there’s been no specific mention of Youtube. When you ask ” Is there some other critical platform I should explore and know”, and please excuse me if I’m stating the obvious, but I do think it’s essential for every social media person to be well versed with the opportunities afforded by Youtube.

  • @donnaduncan oh yes, I agree with you, for many of my clients YouTube is ideal. I don’t know if it is a oh-so-conservative Midwest thing, but many of them are a bit shy about YouTube. Working to get them there!

  • @mich Well there’s a remedy for that too! You can point out the many, many how-to videos that can be referenced for additional help, as needed.  That way your clients don’t actually have to get in front of a camera.
