Tablet – what would you buy? (26 posts)

  • I am considering purchasing a tablet to better manage work and my personal social media. My mom recently got a Transformer Prime. I’m not an Apple fan so no iPad for me. Feel free to include them in the discussion, however, as I know many people do and we need to hear from all sides.

  • @kc_kreative Hey Kristy.

Glad to see you aren’t an Apple fan. ;)

I would recommend any of the ones from Samsung. They are my comapny of choice for phones and tablets.

  • I have a Pandigital and have had it since Dec and love it! My daughter also has a tablet. They seem to do the same thing and have the same features.

  • @kc_kreative We have an iPad in large part because we bought it before some of the improved competitors joined the space. As a Windows person (I worked for 10 years for Microsoft partners) at times I find it hard to adjust.

I really like it for travel when I don’t have heavy-lifting work to do –I can easily check email and social media with a lot less bulk. Battery life is great, too. We watched two movies and read a book on a plane and still had some life left.

But, the competitors are also somewhat less expensive, which doesnt’ hurt, either

  • I highly recommend the ASUS Transformer series. I have the first generation and can’t wait to get the new one.

  • The only tablet I’ve used is the iPad and I love it. It has some great apps and I haven’t really had any problems with it.

  • Motorola Xoom. I’ve had mine since September and still think I made a great decision. BTW, bought it from Target who has a 90-day return/exchange policy

  • @michaelraia I was looking at the ASUS as it seems to be the only tablet that has MS Office on it.  I really need for my tablet to do things that are functional to my work, not just like my cellphone the HTC Evo.

  • @corabledsoe Thanks for the tip about Target. It wouldn’t have been my first choice.  @trudy I agree that the tablet should have more functions than your phone (and a larger screen).

    @russellallert @taliafoster @joanmuschampfagnani @michaelraia @dianebianchi Thanks for the feedback and suggestions.

  • @kc_kreative samsung is really awesome! And yeah its built on open source technology so have better space for improvement in-terms of user specific apps. Samsung galaxy note is what i like. But seems like there are different choices for different people here so ultimately its you who has to decide :)

I have the first iPad and I really like it. I do feel it’s better for consuming content than creating it, although with new apps coming out all the time, that’s probably not true anymore.

A lot of my friends who never bought an apple product in their life bought the iPad and they are addicted.

    Good luck in your choice!

  • @moinshaikh I definitely have to make the choice :) Still I like to hear the pluses and minuses from my peers on why they chose a certain platform / device.

@rich-brooks For some reason, Apple just isn’t for me. I love their designs and they are great for creative types (like my ex-photographer boyfriend). I have used Macs and i-devices in the past. My brother has added Apple to his Windows household so he can design apps. He used to design chips at NVidia a few years back (and Intel before that).

  • I have the Toshiba Thrive and love it. Like @michaelraia I almost got the Asus Transformer, but the Toshiba Thrive is just as good; both have some of the best ratings. Good luck on your purchase!

  • I ABSOLUTELY was not an Apple person for years. I have to admit I did convert. The functionality of the iPad and the great ease of cloud computing has made mac very appealing. I have found it to be very efficient for all three of my businesses. If you want more of a break down on what made my purchase decisions I actually compared tablets on my monthly radio segment on Mind Your Own Business Radi “Tech Talk with Ry”. The link below should take you straight to the audio. It took a lot but I was finally convinced Apple was the business tool.

  • I have a 7 inch Acer tablet that I use daily. When I travel I prefer to have the tablet with me than my laptop computer. It is smaller, lighter and it fits in my purse. The screen is about the size of a paperback book. Roocase makes a well designed sturdy holder that keeps it well protected. I carry my tablet with me always.

  • I have a Sony S Tablet which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. Had it for 5 months now. What’s different about it is the style of it. Sorta shaped a little like a notebook so it has a little lift on one end. The purpose is for those who like to sit and type on it, it’s NOT flat. You can also attach a keyboard to it, which is cool. They are around $399 I think.

  • I’ve used an iPad, Playbook, Galaxy Tab, and Kindle Fire. Of the four, the Playbook and Galaxy Tab were my favorite for work related jobs (with the Playbook being #1, and the GTab being a distant #2) and the Fire was my favorite for content consumption combined with shopping capability. The iPad I gave back to my sister. It is a fun little toy, but I didn’t like the fact that I had to sync it to one computer in order to make things work on it, load new aps, etc. The Galaxy Tab and Kindle Fire just need a wireless connection and their done, no fuss, no headaches, just search and go. The Playbook required an actual Blackberry for tethering and account issues, which I hear is being ended on the next update. I would have cared, but I always have my blackberry on me (yeah yeah, I know).

  • so , so glad you asked this and have gotten great answers…. curious to see what you end up getting…what are your top priorities for use? I’d like to compare to see if I should follow you down this road! @kc_kreative

  • @lizkarschner Thanks for the alternative Liz.  @deairby I’ll be sure to post when I make a purchase. I want it for social media, email, Microsoft work apps and reading. My hope is to get the tablet before my association’s conference in May so I can update my social sites as well as theirs. My Droid X screen is too small. Plus I’d like to update the conference site on the go with timely pictures and videos.

  • you can take pictures with it, too? @kc_kreative

  • @deairby I believe that some have the capability. I really meant linking my phone to the tablet :)

  • In a couple of weeks i will be looking into purchasing a tablet.   I figure a tablet with USB or memeory card would be a great choice. Leaning more to the USB port tablet.

  • Interesting – I’m going iPad shopping tomorrow. Soon as Apple reveals whether their new product will be an iPad 3 or an iPad HD. Either way as a content creator (and consumer) Apple products have proved to provide the best experience for me :)

  • Although Brand is a factor for many people, I’d say if I was in the market for an ipad type device, it would probably be the ipad by Apple.

I have so many of these things >>> “gadget toys” with no real use, that I falter to purchase any more these days.

I have the Nokia 810 and (pretty much) only play games on it. It’s about the size of (a little bigger than, actually) the iphones are these days and has a slide out qwerty keyboard. I also do use it to check how websites look and operate on a small device, which I also do with the iphones we have here. The newest iphone also has a slide out qwerty keyboard (Samsung Indulge).

A double check so to speak on how websites deliver on these devices. But for use as actual “working on business” items, they are not used. Nokia has been a good brand for me as is Toshiba laptops.

My Kindle Fire, that I use each and every day now, is my favorite new gadget. It’s great, I LOVE it and peruse newly built websites on that too. THIS is a never ending cycle with all the gadgets.  Sorry, getting windy again.

Since I am a real qwerty keyboard fan (is that old-fashioned?) I think the choice your Mom made in the Asus Transformer Prime is a great choice. Did hers come with the qwerty keyboard docking system? I assume they all do. At any rate, that seems like a great choice to me. Since the prices run a little cheaper than the Apple ipad, that might be my choice too.

IF I was in the market for another “gadget” – plus I don’t know where I could possibly find room for another thing like this!  When I got the Kindle Fire last November I was almost bamboozled about where to plug the thing in! Yikes.

  • I happen to have an iPad 2 (actually won it in a drawing!), but no matter what you end up choosing, I think you will LOVE having a tablet!  I find it is perfect for quickly checking and responding to emails without having to get on my laptop.  This is especially great when traveling.  I have also used it many times to do research in my business (I do background checks).  Good luck in your decision making and I know you will very happy with the functionality and convenience in whatever you choose!
