  • What do you recomend to do, to export the information or to start like a new website?, if I export it, do I have to insert every item for sale one by one again?.

And If I have the same server, do I have to loose my domain and have my name after his name (like facebook does, facebook/something)?

Now I undestand better how to work with Joomla, but I have had a lot of clients saying that they can’t close the purchase process, always for different reason, my servers said that Joomla has having problems working with all systems, is that right?

I’m not familiar with all the

There are several ways to import your Content from Joomla into WordPress.

You can find information on how to do it here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Importing_Content

You can keep your domain name just uninstall Joomla and install WordPress on the same server.

  • @scottmadden, thanks Scott I have Joomla 1.5, I will check it with your information.

    Your Welcome!

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez Greetings Hilda – before going that far to switch from Joomla to WP or any CMS you will definetely want to make sure that WP you can setup the same technical environment on WP i.e. building a webshop.

The next thing is – if you have server problems or if you receive server errors with your Joomla site you will probably run into the exact same problems with WP. At least the three big CMS WP, Drupal and Joomla need an up-to-date php version on your server, all of them do not really like to sit on shared hosting servers etc. Are you running on your own server, do you house your servers, do you run within a hosting subscription? Those questions are important to be answered prior to switching.

And last but not least: If your clients have problems checking out on your shop site this can be a problem with some security extensions within Joomla blocking certain ports (but again, same thing true for WP or Drupal).

  • do eeeet… it’s what all the cool kids are doing!

  • @ecumenix, thanks Thomas, It will help me to find the real problem. I have a hosting suscription, so I have to verify if the problem is just with me or with more clientes of them that are using something different than Joomla.

@chrisloeser, if it’s going to make me belong on the ”cool kids” group, then, it will be a good reason to do it  :)  !!

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez  I love to hear how this went for you.

  • @amyhallbiz , thanks Amy, I’m still working on it, my Joomla is not working because doesn’t let my clients sign in, or register or finish the sale process. So the WordPress version is ready, it took everything from Joomla, but because I have more than 300 items and the import-export process didn’t take the information on every item to find the shipping cost, I’m doing it one by one. It takes a lot of time. If you think I’m not on the right way, please let me know.

I’m not familiar with all the technological part, I belong to the old Marketing Managment teams (I said old, because it has changed a lot in the last few years) and I love and enjoy to do what I’m doing.

I hope I can finish with it during this week!

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez…. Just curious what storefront/shopping cart are/were you running on Joomla? Did you verify with your host that you had the newest version of PHP running on the server. I recently had client ask me to upgrade their site to a newer version of Joomla since they where running 1.0 and the PHP script that was running on their server was version 4 which causes all kinds of issues with Joomla 1.5 and above.

  • @heathercompton, thank you Heather, yes, I already checked it, and it says: “VirtueMart, your last sesion is outdated, last is 2.0.2 and you are using 1.1.5.”

So, I will call tomorrow morning to ask for an update version :)  The 1.1.5 is since 2010 when I started with my website, WOW, it was never updated.

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez

i have never used joomla, but I can assure you that you will love wordpress.

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez  Just a caution … calculating shipping is sometimes challenging. I don’t think it’s WordPress. I think it’s the shipping companies whose plugins don’t always bring up the correct shipping amounts. :(

  • @hildaalanisgonzale… Using old versions of Virtuemart will definitely cause issues. They have made a lot of updates in the last few years. My biggest hiccup was that my host was running old PHP script on my server.

Glad you are getting the bugs in your site worked out. I have used both WordPress and Joomla and I prefer Joomla because of the design flexibility. I have found it easy to upgrade (templates and extensions) as well as keep a full site backup that I can even automate using Akeeba Backup. I also love the capability of being able to edit content from the backend or front end.

    Good luck with your site!!!

  • @heathercompton I asked for a new version, but they didn’t do it, they prefere that I change everything to wordpress, so I’m still working on with the input of the items.

It’s hard for me to understand all this, it takes time, and when finaly I feel good with something, it’s time to change for the new options.

The Changes on technology are working faster than me :)

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez
Who are they? That’s really an odd answer.

Even Wordpress needs to run on a current version of PHP.

  • I would just like to say, it is a good move to go to wordpress.  Joomla is very bad.  Setup the new site in parallel if you can (i.e. in a subfolder) so you can test its working good before flicking the switch.

  • That’s exactly what I’m doing Vincent, but what I saw yesterday that I was doing some research in google, trying to search key words and see in which page number my web site Was founded, I saw that the subfolder is also active and people can see everything while I was making all the changes. I almost done with this, thank you. Heather, I was also surprised with the answer, it made me get some questions about the company.

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez

There is an Under Construction plugin that will hide your new site until your ready to flip the switch you can find it here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/underconstruction/
