Switched to Linux Server thru GoDaddy – Website Elements Are Gone (17 posts)

Topic tags: godaddy, html, linux, website
  • I have used GoDaddy for seven years and always used the Windows server without issue. Since I set up my WP blog on my site a couple of months ago, it kept timing out, etc. So I switched to a Linux server yesterday, and while my blog loads faster and looks great, my website is not.

The link is http://www.virtuallyondemand.net and depending on the browser used, different glitches are present. IE8 and Chrome seem to show the text, but the styles, pictures, etc. are gone and links within the text portions aren’t working correctly. IE9 shows the site looks fine, but the links within the text portions aren’t working correctly.

My husband built the site, so he looked into it and cannot figure out what is causing the issues. The GoDaddy rep said everything looks fine, and to send him the page path and tell him the issue with hit which is what I did in my first email.

I researched the issue online, but haven’t found anything close to what I am experiencing. So I would greatly appreciate any help you can give and if necessary, step-by-step instructions on how to fix it.

FYI – The FTP shows the css and images folders with corresponding files are there. Also, I don’t want to move my site to WP at the moment. I just need this fixed today, and I’m sure it’s something simple.

  • Without seeing the root files, I’d say the “images” folder is missing or in the wrong place. Also, was the old site built using a Microsoft web builder software?

A better and faster solution: drop the old static site and move all of that content over into your wordpress blog in the form of pages. You can set a home page in wordpress settings under Settings > Reading. It will do far better in terms of SEO and would allow you to easily maintain it within the wordpress dashboard. If you need an explanation, you can call me, John, at 585-861-7483.

  • I replied to @juleswebb and @johnkelly in the edited topic above because it wouldn’t save my separate reply for some reason.

Also, GoDaddy just replied and said they can’t open the Word doc I sent with screen prints and that I should do a search online to find out if others have experienced similar things. WOW, that is such a huge help.

So, I am willing to pay someone his/her standard hourly rate to work with me to fix this ASAP. We can do a Webex so I can log into my FTP and you can show me how to fix it as an option. Thank you!

  • i agree with @johnkelly about the images folder. Instead of images/twitter.png use the entire link, starting with the http the only image file I can find is http://virtuallyondemand.net/blog/wp-content/themes/headlines/images/

also, if you ‘read more’ or click anything on the blog the reader is send to the webpage

  • and the static page that @johnkelly references is how I’d do it. lose the /blog and put wordpress directly on the URL. Make a static page as he says

  • @johnkelly @juleswebb @robmitchell @richardmclaughlin I sincerely appreciate your time, insights, suggestions and recommendations.

Without step-by-step instructions, I am still lost. So, I am going to return to the Windows server and hope that corrects everything.

Some day, I will tackle moving my site to WP but I will likely have to hire someone. So if you have an expert in moving sites to WP and knows css, coding, etc. let me know. Thank you!

  • I’m a website designer/developer and work with WordPress for a living if you’re interested. http://www.6x6design.com

  • @karenataylor login to godaddy. Look and the control panel. Look to see if there is an images folder under the domain name.

If you can do that then we might be able to help. If you can’t then calling @johnkelly seems like a good idea. If you ask for his help he wil need your admin password. Not getting around that so make the leap of faith and trust him.

  • @karenataylor
Hi Karen, sorry for the delayed response, I was in a meeting.

It looks like you’ve almost got this licked. Your css file is now showing, but your images are still not mapped correctly. You stated that you can see the img folder on the server using your ftp software.  Are you sure that the folder is in the correct location?

It’s hard to troubleshoot this without more info, let me know if your interested in speaking over the phone. If so I’ll PM you my number.

  • @juleswebb Please don’t apologize!

@juleswebb @richardmclaughlin @johnkelly @robmitchell I switched back to the Windows server, and everything is working fine as it was before the switch. I have decided to stop writing blog posts for now and move my focus to a critical area of my business; obtaining more clients so I don’t have to return to corporate. I will remove the blog link from my website pages today.

When my business becomes successful, I will decide at that point if I want to start blogging again, and if so I will move my entire site to WP.

I cannot thank you enough for all of your time on this!

  • Hi @karenataylor,
Just food for thought… Having a strong online presence is key to accomplishing the goal you have. I know, I’ve been in your shoes and did it too and now it is my full-time business. I’d be happy to discuss this with you at greater length – no charge of course. I just hate to see you or anyone make a wrong decision about their website and marketing. Moving away from your blog would be just that – a big mistake! Feel free to give me a call. 877-504-7483.

  • @johnkelly Thank you, that is very nice of you! After blogging for nine months, I have two subscribers and receive occasional comments. The highest number of views in a day was around 40. I don’t enjoy it and the ROI is not worth it. I have about three months to sign two clients or I have to return to corporate. I want to create a signature talk so I can speak at local organizations and associations as well as join a BNI chapter.

If I was a Virtual Assistant (VA), I would have several clients by now. Being an Administrative Consultant (AC) with a unique business model has lengthened the learning curve for potential clients to understand what I do and how it is different than VAs. I know of two successful ACs who launched their businesses around the same time I did and they have several clients without blogging, they don’t offer freebies on their sites, and they don’t do teleseminars or webinars. They went the route of public speaking and it has worked for them tremendously well.

I know what my decisions looks like from the outside, but I need to follow my gut and this is the route I want to go for now. If you could send positive thoughts my way over the next few weeks, that would be great!

  • No problem. best of luck to you.

  • @karenataylor – sending positive thoughts your way!
Please let us now how things turn out or if there is something you think we can help you with.

    @johnkelly – I like nice guys:)

  • @juleswebb Thank you! I definitely will. Me, too!

  • You can do it, Karen. Focus, focus, focus. Take action, take action, take action. Positive  prayers going up for you. @karenataylor

  • @deairby Thanks, Dea!
