suffer from BSMS? (12 posts)

  • Are you suffering with Bright Shiny Marketing Syndrome? I have more in the past than I do now. Just wondering if anyone has a prescription for a cure for this ailment? I still need some medicine for this tempting malady. How do you spot the symptoms? Is it fatal? Is there a BSMS-Anonymous to join?

  • I just quit looking at them for now realizing they are distractions to me.

  • @deairby My dear reverent Miss Dea, all I can say is do NOT walk toward the light!

  • FWIW I was just going over Analytics data across our accounts and was surprised to see that many of our Indian clients have a lower cost per lead on their display campaigns over their search campaigns. It’s the opposite in the US. I asked a colleague (Indian guy) why and he said “We still like clicking on shiny things, not the case in the US anymore.”

  • LOL .. I suffer from it too sometimes, but when I ask myself seriously if the shiny object is going to be the best way to meet the marketing objectives, often the answer is simply, ‘NO’.

  • @atlantarobin :) way too funny!

    Oh my precious!!

  • @deairby Follow what @atlantarobin says… Following the newest, next best thing is almost always not on strategy, and it’s certainly not in the calendar plan!

Put it on the list to be evaluated at a benchmark session, and if it looks promising, decide what goes, or what resources to add to handle its addition.

  • Yip, I think it is contagious! I am trying to unsubscribe from a lot of things because my email gets flooded with new things so I don’t accomplish as much as I should.

  • @deairby

Honestly, unless your business IS social media (i.e., consultant), you should be waiting for things to settle for a few weeks.

You never know if something’s going to be the next Plurk or Twitter, and even if it is the next Twitter, some late comers have been very successful after watching other brands/people crash and burn.

    (cough)Pinterest(cough)

  • thanks for the wisdom, Rich @rich-brooks

  • @jasonwiser Uh oh, Jason. Now you’re freaking me out, my Precious…. Ever since I saw Lord of the Rings, precious has never sounded the same to me, lol. Talk about walking toward the light of shiny new objects… there’s a good lesson for you!

  • @rich-brooks I’m still waiting for a mass copyright takedown order to hit. Too much of a good thing can reeeeeally get you in trouble… especially since most people really don’t know, understand or apply copyright laws very well on the net. I’m thinking the commercial interest in Pinterest will eventually get them and others there in big trouble, so I’m staying away for now.
