strategy plan for building a speaking career? (7 posts)

  • Everyone has to come up with their own business plan for sure but if anyone has already done this…..,well, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” or maybe “don’t reinvent the wheel.” There are some obvious points: 1) become the “go to person” in your field 2) publish a book 3) write a blog 4) offer free help/content 5) know your stuff (training and certification) 6) join an association that gives access to contacts 7) know your target audience 8) have a strategy—well, yeah, that’s what I’m asking.

  • @deairby

As often is the case, I had no plan, but I did take advantage when things came up.

    1. I started by putting on my own event w/a friend. We both spoke and the Chamber gave us their space for free, even though we charged for it.
    2. I accepted every opportunity to speak in front of local groups I could.
    3. When I had the opportunity to speak at a national event for the first time (Blogworld) I took it, even though the idea scared the bejeezus out of me.
    4. My blogging led to a lot more opportunities (like BlogWorld) and I got to guest post at SME. I met Mike Stelzner at a BWE party and suggested he consider me if he ever did a Blogging Success Summit. Turned out he had one planned!
    5. I created my own conference! With two friends we created Social Media FTW which for 3 years was a big social media conference here in Maine. Gave me a shoe-in for another speaking gig!
    6. Although FTW retired this year, I’m working on a new conference. And yes, I’ll be speaking there, too. ;)

In short, start small and local to practice, keep blogging, consider webinars and just start doing things!

  • @deairby  I’m going down the speaking route, too, and everything I’ve read/studied supports what @rich-brooks said.

I joined the local chapter of the National Speakers Association as a member candidate.  It’s given me a chance to watch some incredibly gifted speakers, study how they engage an audience, tell stories, and leave you wanting to hear more.

I’m also working with an ex-reporter from the DC area CBS affiliate on how to speak comfortably and effectively, how to craft my stories, make eye contact, etc.  It’s been very helpful (and humbling!).

As I’ve declared 2012 the Year-of-the-Video for myself, I hope to get even more comfortable “getting myself out there,” whether the audience is in the room or not.

  • thanks so much for the in formation @rich-brooks @bethnovick

  • @deairby @rich-brooks @bethnovick Thanks to you, I am certainly going to get going on this as well. Speaking is something I have always enjoyed doing, I do it well (or so I am told) and I would like to make it a bigger component of my career. Not sure if it can be the sole revenue – in fact, I doubt it – but along with consulting, blogging and yes, writing a book (one of my New Year objectives), perhaps I am on my way…

Will implement some of the advice read here, and will continue to network, network, network… ;-)

  •   @deairby – Thanks for the post. very insightful!

@bethnovick – great idea about the NSA, I have been considering doing the same.

     @rich-brooks – great testimonial!!!

I am doing something similiar rich with The Internet Conference. We are starting locally in Dallas, TX, and will expand from there. So many small business owners (and medium for that) have no ideal of all that is out there that can aide their businesses from both an educational and practical point of view.

We hope to fill that vacuum, and yes I will be one of the many speakers.

  • sounds like a good plan @donpurdum
