Square Card Reader (50 posts)

  • Has anyone used the Square card reader (http://www.squareup.com) to accept credit cards? I would love to know your experience with it.

From what I’ve read, it can be very cost effective vs. a merchant account. I am small and will be a low volume acceptor, so it looks attractive

  • @joanmuschampfagnani
    Hi Joan,
I am checking out the Square Card Reader. Seems enticing that they mail you the free card reader.
I am small volume right now but want to know what happens if I expand.
I hope we can keep in touch and share what we find out.
Thanks for making us aware of this.

  • @rebeccacohen I am sending for one. Since I have some virtual clients, I will have to use the manual option, which does cost a bit more. But, I believe in making it easy to get paid, and I’d rather not get in line behind others requiring cash. Plus I bill most regular clients monthly, so accelerating payments is helpful.

  • I’ve used it quite often on a side business I own. Normally, I need to input the credit card information on my iPhone as the buyer is not local so I pay a higher interest rate but either way, I love it.

  • @jackburgin I agree. I LOVE IT!!!  I use it all the time.  I have been a business owner for over 25 yrs, and back in the day of monthly merchants fees, tons of paperwork and still the % of fee to charge SQUARE is wonderful.  Easy to use and goes directly to your bank account.  I use it when I speak to take immediate payment for the books I sell. I also use it for my mastermind groups.  It is simple to use, I have both an IPhone an IPad I use it on.  Additionally you can set up a ‘menu’ at a trade show so it is as simple as point and click to charge!Best regards!Charlyn

  • @jackburgin Thanks! @rebeccacohen and I are both interested and it is great to have feedback

  • You’re welcome.

If you plan on charging large amounts or many charges, make sure you check into the limit. I found out the hard way that they put a $5,000 limit per month on my account so after I hit the limit, the money is put on hold until the 1st of the following month. I was able to get it raised without much hassle but it cost me several days of cash flow problems.

  • @jackburgin REALLY good info to have! Right now I am still pretty small, but I hope to be much larger. Not surewhat my clients will opt for (I also offer a 2%/net 10 discount) but we shall see

  • @joanmuschampfagnani Good luck with your business Joan

  • @joanmuschampfagnani I used it to sell books at a conference this summer. The organizers trained me on it in mere minutes for the iPhone and iPad. There is a flat transaction fee of 2.75% and no monthly fee (I used to work in the merchant services biz and this isn’t bad). There is no contract as with other firms (such as Verifone).

For the book, I would take a picture of it and then start the charging process. If the person wanted a receipt, they would enter their email address (or send a text to themselves). Definitely recommend for small and mobile businesses.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani Along with everyone else, I love it.  As someone mentioned, you do have to be careful about their limits but the funds are deposited every day and it goes directly into your account. I have an android phone and it works beautifully.  I emailed them for an extra card reader knowing that I would lose it and they sent me another one for free.  If you purchase the card reader at Best Buy, you go online and they credit you back the cost.

Also, cause the thing is so small, it’s easy to lose. So I bought a keychain holder from egisworks. Here’s the link - http://egisworks.com/collections/featured-products/products/sqwear-anywear

Lastly, I left it in my jeans and washed and dried them in hot water and high heat.  It still worked!

  • I just received a post card with invitation to sign up for a Square card reader.  Thanks to all of you, I signed up in less than 5 minutes, was verified, and bookmarked the SQWEAR accessories website for future order.  Thanks members.

  • @maricochran @kc_kreative Thanks for  the feedback. I”ve sent for mine as well!

  • I was using Square for awhile but changed to GoPayment from intuit. If there is a problem with your Square account you can’t reach their customer service via phone. Which since they have all my personal info and are taking payments for me it seems kinda odd that they wouldn’t have a customer support phone number. I had a few other friends have issues with the Square account so I made the switch over to GoPayment. Intuit is a great company and they have a card reader for an iPhone or iPad just like Square. I had to make some adjustments to my account and I was able to speak to a customer service rep on the phone. The GoPayment signup process wasn’t as quick as Square but I feel that I made the right choice by switching. Just my two cents :)

  • @heathercompton All cents welcome! How does that compare cost-wise?

  • I appreciate all the input on Square. I do believe it has a definite place and want to implement it.

  • so glad to find this thread. I have a book signing/speaking/product selling event and plan to use the square. I got it in the mail in a foam box which I have saved to keep it in. @joanmuschampfagnani @rebeccacohen @mikemacey @heathercompton

  • @heathercompton Thanks for the insight about GoPayment. Customer service is very important. Sad to hear that Square isn’t able to handle the inquiries.

Verifone does have a mobile option: http://www.paywaremobile.com/en However, I don’t know much about it as the service was rolling out when I left the business. Also, they tend to have the equipment and not the processing…

  • This is a great thread.  I have also been looking into mobile payment options and this is great information.  Thanks everyone!

  • @dianebianchi @joanmuschampfagnani PS… as backup, I also got the Intuit mobile card reader. They have the same terms unless they changed them in the last year.  Card reader is free with same percentages charged and limitations.

  • Thanks @maricochran

  • @maricochran Good to know, thanks!

I was at a networking meeting last evening, and Square is definitely a buzz! Most of us have ordered it, AND interestingly, about 95% of us first heard about it via their direct mail postcard.

  • I can’t remember the cost differences off the top of my head but from what I remember both where about the same. Is just depends on what type of card you are charging. Also the fees where lower if you used the actually card reader rather than typing the card information. The only thing that I was frustrated with using GoPayment was I had to do an extra step to enable AMEX. I had to call their customer service department and request that it be added to my account. The process took about a week because I had request forms I had to fill out. Other than that GoPayment has be the way to go. I also like that if for some reason I didn’t have my card reader but was by a regular computer I could charge my customers through a secure online terminal.
    @joanmuschampfagnani

  • Absolutely love this thread!  Like the rest of you, I have a Square postcard with it’s nifty foam . . . and I’ve kept the thing, not knowing whether I wanted to use it or not.

  • Thanks @maricochran I wasn’t sure it would work with my Android – I have now ordered a square!

  • @heathercompton Thanks for that info about AMEX. I know lots of small biz that use that

  • just double checking on using my square and I can’t get it to read…did anyone else have a problem? @joanmuschampfagnani @heathercompton @jackburgin @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter Also, in Fast Company March edition magazine, Square was #5 of the world’s 50 most innovative companies. Didn’t know that it was developed by the same developer for Twitter!

  • @deairby I am still waiting for mine.  But the info on the developer is news. Thanks for sharing

  • @deairby, I didn’t have any problems…I use my IPAD and usually hand enter the charge cards…One thing I have noticed once or twice, that the card has been denied the first time and when I try it again, it is approved.I didn’t know that about Square either!!!

  • figured it out…my case was not allowing the square to click down far enough… if I turn it sideways it will go down far enough and work… just in case you have a heavy phone cover too :) @joanmuschampfagnani

  • @deairby I do have a heavy phone cover–at least until my upgrade time!

  • Last October we used the Square for a charity walk I organize. It worked great! We were never able to use cc before so this helped out our sales greatly.

The only complainant we had from walkers was on the iphone the area was a little small to sign in. So if you have a choice you might want to get an iPad to work with.
We only use it once a year so the pay as you use is a great feature for us.

  • @deairby I’m glad you got it working. I’m sure you’ll love it.

I didn’t know it was from the same developer as Twitter. Thanks for the info.

  • hopefully I’ll need it this afternoon for a speaking engagement and sell some books! @jackburgin

  • Good luck @deairby

  • Great Info, I’m going to check out both companies for merchant services.

    Thanks

  • Like so many others, I love it.

It’s cheaper than my merchant account and it’s faster than booting up Windows on my Mac. (Don’t get me started.)

Plus, it’s sold a Apple Stores. I got my Square when they came out and carry it in my pocket all the time. ACCEPT when I spoke in Boston last November. Fortunately, an Apple Store was around the corner. Problem solved!

  • Yes, it works!!! great! and you can email receipts …. instantly @jackburgin

  • Cool update, went to a new little quaint Italian restaurant last night and the waiter was using an IPAD and Square to pay our bill….

  • Oh and the food was fabulous if anyone ever visits the Orlando area, it’s called Peperconi’s.

  • I used it for three different shows that I did and was very pleased.  Easy, efficient and customers loved it.  Cannot tell you how many people told me it was the coolest thing.

  • @sharaspaperie @deairby @marc-pitman @jenniferwashlow-pag @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter @heathercompton @maricochran and many others: great discussion!

I look like a rock star to my newest client now!

  • Rock on star! @joanmuschampfagnanicool restaurant! @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter

  • It’s a good option if you don’t have a lot of transactions with credit cards, or if you use it just in some seasons, there are not initial fee, and not high monthly payments. They accept all brands of credit card, and charge the same commission. The only problem is that square do not accept payments from different country, it was a year ago, I’m not sure if it has changed. I have been using it during one year, and I haven’t had any kind of problem.

  • Keep in mind too, for those of us that have been business owners for years….we used to pay monthly merchant fees for each credit card  company!  Now with Square NO monthly fees!  YEAH!!!

  • It is funny I just hear about Square this morning so I will have to look at this, but look at what just came out on Alltop.comhttp://www.fastcompany.com/1819157/boku-pre-empts-the-wireless-pay-revolution-with-mobile-pay-on-your-current-phone?partner=rss&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+fastcompany%2Fheadlines+%28Fast+Company+Headlines%29

  • @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter Especially if you are low volumne, Square is a good alternative. But even if you need one for a shopping cart, it’s still really helpful for mobile situations!

  • Does anyone know if this will work in the UK?  It seems from the thread that you are still signing a signature.  Here in the UK it is all now chip and pin with no one signing their name.

  • I was in the industry a few years back and you should always get a signature because if you don’t if the person complains to Visa or MC they will win… and you as a merchant will get a charge back. I have not heard of pin unless you are are talking pin debit and that can be extremely expensive as the banks now are charging for each pin debit card that the merchant takes sometimes as high as .30 per transaction.. ouch.

  • @charlyn when you don’t pay a monthly fee you are probably paying it in each transaction fee or % then what you can normally get. When I was in the industry I was focused on medium businesses but I found when I looked at a statement from Square or Intuit… or some others they were charging and getting the money in way shape or form. Even CFO’s of corporations could not understand their statements because the banks make it that way. Remember they mark it up for their profit… never heard of any bank not making a profit… ever… look at their buildings :(
