SPAMMERS (17 posts)

  • not sure where to post this or if this system has a way of reporting Spammers but I have been a  member 24 hours and already I get messages about Laminine I dont need it and I’m sure this networking forum doesn’t want it’s members Spammed

  • @spudty and anyone else who has had the same problem:

Anytime you see/receive spam you can hit the Flag link in the top right of a post. That sends a message via carrier pigeon and/or pneumatic tube to the powers that be and they will take action.

The person in question here was immediately dealt with.

The bottom line is there will always be spammers online. Sometimes this happens because they don’t know how to behave, and other times it’s more purposeful.

In any case, let us know by Flagging the activity and we’ll take care of it.

In addition, feel free to send me a private message. Thanks!

BTW, I was only kidding about the carrier pigeons.

  • thx @rich-brooks I did that (actuallly I hit the inappropiate link at the bottom as it was not on the forums) guessing it could be the way forward and I unfreinded him – power to the people ;-)

  • I think this has been a great site and the rules about inappropriate posts are well enforced.   I have, unfortunately, had one user who has spammed me on Twitter but I’ve deleted him as a friend on here and blocked him on Twitter.  I didn’t want to do it, at first, as the person speaks very poor English and my not understand what is considered poor social media etiquette here.

Just curious…as an open question…what actions does everyone else take when this happens to you?  (Someone befriends/follows/etc. on various sites like this where they get your social IDs…..sends updates/posts/etc. to you that only offer their products/goods??

  • I did have a Nigerian Princess send me a note referencing the forums. I went to flag her, but the acct was already gone.

  • @richardmclaughlin @kylemj6977 @spudty @rich-brooks @spudty- What i am finding is that Pakistan has a many people that are looking for some type of income online, I am working with one person  and yes they do appear that they want to spam you but I guess their country is in more turmoil then the rest of the world. Many people are going unemployed there. Not sure why? I do think when we own a business that everyone we meet should listen to us and want to work with us, but that is not the case. I do believe relationships are important however with that said I also believe that you can promote your business if the discussions seem to go that way. We only have 24hours a day and most of us don’t want to be on the computer for the majority of that time so we look at quick ways to promote. As I have heard it once said that if you have many lines out there about what you do or what you can do to help others, that eventually the flow of people in the internet will be attracted to it. I know for me the more lines the better and I don’t rely on just one way. I have in the past on this forum been reprimanded when I did a webinar for our product and services, It was more of an education to what the industry is doing and what we can do, but it was self promotion. So I asked the same question with help from the leader and moderator and that helped me even more then getting people to the webinar. That was a honest mistake and I do appreciate that I was told it was not appropriate. I love this community and I learn about new tools and other resources I need. Thanks hope this helps others?

  • @prestonodenbrett if you think of it, any cold-call is spam. Also, a lot of people selling online send spam, even if they don’t know it.

the thing I got was a direct email linking back to these forums, a nigerian princess that wanted to move 50 million out of her country. This was spam. Your contacts are just trying to get useful contacts, and sometimes that does seem like spam.

  • @richardmclaughlin- Oh yea, that is Spam… I had one from Africa… Interesting that you mention any cold call is spam? When we first started our business it was a advertising magazine that went to 50,000 people by direct mail. We had to knock on every business door to get our name out and find advertisers. Once we dropped off information- which in that town was over 3 weeks. We then cold-called the owners back. Is that really considered spam? Or is Spam mostly associated with email? Another interesting topic if you don’t mind I will start a new discussion on.

  • @prestonodenbrett I’m not a lawyer, but spam is unsolicited email. Cold calls are unsolicited calls. It’s just the medium that changes. We have spam lists (folders) in email and no-call lists.

  • @richardmclaughlin and @prestonodenbrett, you both make excellent points.   I agree that, in some way, we are all spamming.  What I am referring to is not, in the course of our conversation, you mention that you provide X service at your company or on your own that might meet the need of my Y need.

This topic caught my attention because:

    1. I had someone in California post excessively on a brand page I manage nothing but advertisements for an HR product (in call CAPS) on every post dating back to January.
    2. I had the user on here who began posting to all of my accounts that I had listed first saying to “connect and share” and then “we will do business”.

Both used up valuable time either removing posts (#1) and asking person to cease (#2).

  • i wouldnt  think of not answering  my phone if i didnt know the   caller….  that would  be pretty wierd  for   many  businesses… …..we are  willing  to  take  many  kinds of cold   calls from  numbers we dont know…….

i would like to put   credit card  companies on  a no call list tho!!!  they seem to have   worked around  our indiana no call laws….

  • @annfurnivall Most calls I get are fom numbers I don’t know :(

One thing I would like to change in B2B callers is that they learn a bit about my company before they call. I work for a data center company, We ahve some of the largest data centers in the world. I had a call last week from a dude trying to sell me the primary services we offer.

  • i get that a lot too….and  calling  for  services  we  dont offer…..

  • Well I had a FB message today from someone on here asking me to like their page which was about something I’m definitely not into and really don’t know whether to ignore it or address it.

  • @casmccullough

I get those all the time and ignore them.

    @richardmclaughlin @prestonodenbrett @kylemj6977

I’m not sure I agree that cold calls are spam. I’m not a fan of them either for the caller or the receiver, but the medium DOES change the definition.

If we’re going to call cold calls spam, then wouldn’t the next logical step be to call highway billboards spam, magazine ads spam, and commercials spam? They’re certainly unsolicited.

  • Here is one of my “favorite” cold-call tactics…I call it a tactic as I think it is a bit underhanded.  The caller calls today and asks “Who is in charge of Human Resources?”  The receptionist gives him/her my name.   The caller calls again X amount of days later and says, “Hey, may I speak to Kyle?”  The receptionist transfers directly to me thinking this is someone I know one-on-one.  I answer.   The caller says “Hey, Kyle, this is (name).  How are you?”

I had a conversation with someone about a year ago who used the above method.  I spent about three minutes trying to figure out “who is this?” and “how do I know you?” before she said “well, my reason for calling you today was to tell you about an amazing offer for your company.”

A happy camper I was not.

  • @rich-brooks what about a cold call on your mobile, when you pay for your minutes?

You buy a magazine knowing the adverts are there, and the person that owns the ground under the billboard has the right (based on laws) to rent or sell the space for advertising.

Google runs adverts on the side of my inbox. I see cloud computing (my job) domain names (based in my emails) and this is legit because they own the free service that I use.

What makes the cold caller above board?.
