Solopreneur or Employer? (39 posts)

  • Just wondering how many solopreneurs we have in the club vs. how many of us have employees (or co-workers)?At flyte there’s 8 of us in the office, and a couple of independent contractors we keep busy..You?

  • @rich-brooks And don’t forget us FT employees trying to moonlight and startup on the side. Not sure what you call those those/us kind of people.

  • I’m a freelancer:)

  • I am a solopreneur. I quit my corporate job in September 2011 to launch my business.

  • @rich-brooks We’re a Mom & Pop! My husband build WordPress websites and I do the marketing and training for them. :)

  • we  were  mom and  pop only  for about  6  yrs   but now have about  8 employees.plus  a  couple of independant  carpenter crews    we keep  busy…my dh  does all the  books, computer, trucks, bills finance   in other words all the boring stuff…i do the   planning  buying  and  displaying and  marketing….we are open  6  days a week  with  at least  4  working  every day….i  started it…

  • We are family owned and operated business, At this time  there are five of us plus hired outside contractors. At one time I had 25 employees before we decided to downside, with concentration put  on high end niches .

  • A “solopreneur” providing Inbound Marketing Services unless you count subcontractors I go to in overload situations.

  • My wife and I own our social media management company and we have a few bloggers and designers on retainer for specific projects. Today happens to be the company’s 1 year anniversary. Lucky Friday the 13th for us!

  • @rich-brooks I would be the solopreneur.  I do use independent contractors for help, and have my husband helping as well.  I really plan to stay that way.

  • SOLO @rich-brooks

  • Solo but I work with a former client of mine now a partner so to speak on some projects when needed.. @rich-brooks

  • Solo as well

  • Solo  exploring JV’s

  • I have basically been a solo entrepreneur for several years. however, one of my clients asked me to be an outsourcer for 1-3 people they had under anothercontract so then I had 2-3 employees and now that is down to 1. But that person works at the clients site as did the others, not mine . So I guess I am both a solo and an employer although I do not directly supervise that person, more akin to a temp agency scenario.  Best of both worlds? I like it as it is easy  and might consider doing it for other clients.

  • I’d say I’m a solopreneur plus. I’m the only full-time person, but I work very regularly with five contractors — so much so that I almost consider them business partners. And, I get additional part-time help from two of my family members.

Like many of you who have responded, I love keeping things small so we can provide personal service to all our clients.

  • @karenataylor Hoping to do the same one day and take that leap of faith and work on my own business full time, currently working full time as a community manager and running my own social media consultancy in the spare time, still at the early stages of growing my presrnce so who knows where the road will take me , stay tuned :) #skysthelimit

  • @ravishukle Good luck!

  • Solo but working on putting together a couple of collaborated projects…

  • I am an absentee owner of several businesses and have been self employed since high school.  I have never worked for anyone, so my management style has been learned via the school of hard knocks.  I’m always willing to listen to everyone, employees and other business owners.  I never know when, or from whom, I’ll learn something valuable.  I am a bit behind the curve, and relatively new to this whole social media world.  It will be interesting to see what develops from it, for myself and employees.  I remain a work-in-progress.

  • @jamesalonso Congrats and keep it up!
    Double-time.
FT as an SEO strategist, specialist and link builder.
    PT I head-up a semi-solo, family business–I don’t consider family members to be “employees”

  • Thanks! Likewise, @tysonstevens. :)

  • solo :)

  • @richbrooks, same as @jamesalonso, @annfurnivall and @amyhallbiz.  My husband and I are officially a partnership, but for the first year or two it will be me on my own actually working on the business.  Hope to pull my husband away from his usual 9 to 5 and onto the business asap.

  • I am a solopreneur that does bookkeeping & financial services virtually!

  • I am solo. I am a Professional Organizer and I work one on one with clients helping them organize their homes, offices, basements, garages and storage units. I love it!

  • I am solo.  However, I have a virtual assistant and a sales contractor.  I also hire a lot of specialists to do work for me.  I believe you must figure out what you’re good at and find a way to have the other things done for you.  That’s the only way you will become financially free. If you’re doing filing, bookkeeping, etc and you could have someone else do it for $12 an hour, you need to figure out a way to get others do it.  If you remain solo, you drastically hold back the potential of your company.  If one more account or one more sale will make you hundreds or thousands of dollars, do the math.

  • @rich-brooks I’m a solopreneur but I contract work to a pool of talented people. I’ve been self-employed since 1995 and normally have a team of contractors working with me. I do project work, so I bring on people to help out for the duration.

It’s hard to find good contractors, but when the match works, I love it. I have several stay-at-home moms who just want a little work on the side with loose deadlines. I love knowing that I’m helping them live their dreams, too.

  • I am also solo.  I am a Virtual Assistant who help small business owners and other solopreneurs with their website management, administrative, social media management, etc.

  • My sister and I own a social media consulting company. We will be expanding soon enough to hire employees.

  • I’m solo. After the Marines, I found the corporate world interesting to say the least. Working for myself, I can be me, and aspire to whom I want to be, instead of what someone else wants for me…their goals, their dreams. I work well indapendantly, and love the challenges of self employment……security is my worst nightmare. I absolutely love the risk’s involved with what I do, and waking up everyday knowing that I am one step closer to accomplishing yet another goal and dream, and helping others to realize that life is full of opportunities, if we just open our eyes and leave our comfort zones, and seize the day!!! Never give up, never give up, never ever give up!!!! Semper Fidelis!!!!

  • I am a solopreneur as well. I consider myself to be a project manager who outsources the components of my jobs to the pros.

  • I go it alone. My company is a registered corporation that possesses a sales tax license in the state of PA which gives us sales tax exemption.

  • I’m a solepreneur with independent contractors that balance out my skills to provide a complete service to clients.

  • Solopreneur & loving it. :-)

  • @rich-brooks I’m a soloist but have a team of volunteers who help me run my page for one business and a VA who does a few hours a week.

  • I started out as solpreneur but now have my husband doing the SEO and other things and I work with a great and talented graphic designer as and when.

  • we’re another husband and wife team – he’s a financial planner and I handle all the marketing and social media. We intend to stay small as he’s had partners & employees in the past and is not interested in going that route again.
    Keepin’ it simple…
