Social Settings in Google Analytics (5 posts)

  • Has anyone played around with the Social Settings tab in Google Analytics?

You seem to be able to enter your social media profile URLs, but it’s not clear to what end.

Plus, the only example they give is youtube.com/user/example

Does this work with platforms Google doesn’t own?

What additional data do you get?

Here’s the “Help” (note my quotes):

If you leave the Web Property Prefix blank, you’ll see Activities data for the domain you are tracking with Google Analytics (e.g. example.com). If you also wish to see Activities data for properties such as your YouTube channel, enter your prefixes here; for example,youtube.com/example. Make your prefix as specific as possible (i.e. do not simply enter youtube.com). Activities data is only shown for properties from which your domain has received hits.

  • Good question!  I know Google Analytics Reports can be customized to include Social Media stats but I haven’t taken the time yet to find out how.  Will be interested if anyone has gone through the process…

  • I’m having a challenge with this, too.  I can see how many clicks I’ve gotten from various social networks, but I can’t see what people did once they got to my site.  I need to see conversion rates, not just clicks.

    Also, what is “assisted” conversion?

    Any ideas?

I posted about this 2 days ago in the facebook forum here http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/clubs/facebook/forum/topic/measure-the-value-of-social-media-with-google-analytics/

Here is a copy of what I posted:

A new set of Social reports help you measure the impact of your social marketing initiatives and evaluate the effect social media has on your Goals and Ecommerce activities. The 4 new reports aggregate key data points to help you see the complete picture of how social marketing and media affect your business.

    Read about it here http://analytics.blogspot.com/2012/03/capturing-value-of-social-media-using.html

  • @scottmadden

Thanks, but that doesn’t really answer my questions.

I know about the Social Reports, but this is slightly different. It’s the Social Settings tab under the admin section.

Depending on how you set this up, it seems that GA will be able to track even more information about your social traffic, but it’s not clear to what end, and there even seems to be a caveat that if you don’t set up your own site correctly you could be doing more harm than help.
