Social Media Plan / SOSTAC (5 posts)

  • Hi fellow campers! I have been writing out a social media plan to apply as a starting point for each of our campaigns. I have been doing a lot of reading from Smart Insights and references of PR Smith but I am starting to get a little foggy in my mind. I am following the SOSTAC system (Situation analysis, Objectives, Strategy, Tactics, Actions, Control) and feel like I am starting to go in circles. I tried laying everything into a table but felt like it would not necessarily make sense to someone in my department who is just getting accustomed to Social Media.
Have any of you had this issue? What tools/ methods did you use to outline precisely what you needed and cut out the “Fluff?” Any help is appreciated!

  • @alexandrabriggs Hi Alexandra

I use what I call mind-maps. I create (with pencil and paper) a sort of flow chart with main points being linked together by threads.

This always makes it easier for me to understand, but then again I am a more visual person.

Not sure if this is helpful: we put together web marketing plans (including social media, but also SEO, mobile, webinars, etc.) for all of our clients.

We have a template we’ve created for each category, removing ones that are inappropriate for specific businesses. (Candy Store? You can probably lower the priority of LinkedIn.)

Once we’ve filled out all the categories we go back to the original goals & audience and prioritize our actions to accomplish those goals for that audience.

  • @russellallert @rich-brooks Thank you both for your ideas! They were both very helpful. I am hoping that today, starting with a fresh mindset, I can start mapping better and prevent my mind (and writing) from going around in circles.

  • @alexandrabriggs Good luck, Alexandra! :)

@rich-brooks Templates are the way to go, Rich!
