Social media monitoring tools (22 posts)

Topic tags: Analytics, Monitoring
  • Hi all,I was wondering what tools each of you use to monitor your social media activities. I’m currently using sprout social, I like the graphs and stats it provides, however I haven’t used any others. What do you use? And what do you like and dislike about it?Thanks, Sam

  • Hi Sam

I’m using HootSuite and I’m nearly 100% satisfied. It gives me a lot of features to handle different tasks and managing multiple accounts  across different social networks.

Some things I don’t like at all:

    • Integration for Google+  - Only for enterprise users
    • Their analytics report system – I guess it is one of their ways of making money with HootSuite
    • Missing Location support – Geotoko looks fantastic but comes with a heavy pricing
    • The search and filter system is a bit clunky

So all in all, for it’s pricing, it’s my way to manage my and my clients channels.

There are a couple of other tools (more feature-rich) out there but the pricing starts with a couple of hundred dollars a month.

Hope to see some other alternatives, it’s great that you have asked for “dislikes” ;-)

  • @samscholfield

I agree with @nickrock Hootsuite is brilliant.

    I also use:

    Google Alerts
    SocialMention

    Cheers,
    Russ

  • @samscholfield I also use HootSuite like  @nickrock and  @russellallert and I have been impressed and pleased overall. I am definitely eager for Google+ to be integrated since all of the sites I manage for social media have an accompanying G+ page, but even without I am pleased.

I used TweetDeck in the past but once I switched to HootSuite I haven’t looked back. I use HootSuite Pro and have been impressed with the assistance provided along with the ease of use. A great help for me is the HootSuite University Free webinars that highlight different capabilities and ways to maximize the benefits

  • @samscholfield @nickrock @russellallert @alexandrabriggs

I used Hootsuite about 18 months ago, and went back to doing it individually on each page. Something about it that I enjoy. I pay more attention to what is going on in each site when I do it that way.

But that’s just me. However, I do use Google Alerts to so I know what is being said out there, lol.

  • @donpurdum That’s kind of refreshing to hear, Don. It’s about finding the right tool for you – if you prefer that and it works for you then all the better! :)

    Russell Allert

  • @samscholfield @russellallert @donpurdum @nickrock @alexandrabriggs It depends what you mean by a monitoring tool. I also use Hootsuite, and absolutely love it, but it provides limited monitoring capabilities per se. You can follow hashtags, program tweets and synch accounts, and it’s great at doing that. Tweetdeck and Seesmic are also known tools that do a similar great job, for free.

However, if the question truly is about monitoring tools, including measuring sentiment (positive vs negative) about your brand, identifying influencers speaking about your brand, these tools don’t cut it. You usually have to look into paying solutions, that include:
    - Radian6
    - Sysomos
    - Brandwatch
    - Viralheat
    - Alterian SM2
    - Beeholve
    - Ubervu

There is a small agency in Montreal (Quebec) that I am familiar with, called Adviso, and they produced a comparative analysis for these 7 tools. You can download it for free by clicking on this link.

    Cheers,
    Frederic

  • @fredericgonzalo Great list, Frederic! :)

  • For the value and what they measure, I like Sprout Social, Social Mention and Google Alerts. Some of these don’t drill down to more detail for my liking but then some clients aren’t looking for extraordinary amounts of detail either as much as seeing progress and increased awareness of their brand. I’m also interested in checking out Swix, which seems like a very nice best of both worlds options in terms of monitoring and metrics. If anybody has used it, please let me know as I’d like to hear your opinion of it.

Agree that paid tools like Radian6 are easily the most robust, but honestly it can be a lot more than what some clients actually need. I wouldn’t hesitate to use it though for a client that required that higher level of monitoring.

  • I have used Hootsuite for my outgoing messages but haven’t paid attention to the analytics, does sprout social work for scheduling outgoing messages, too and how does Hubspot fit in. and what about nutshell mail?  I’m trying to wrap my head around all these and figure out which are different options for the same function or for different purposes…@samscholfield @russellallert @danonbranding @fredericgonzalo @alexandrabriggs @nickrock @donpurdum

  • I found I had to separate out when I’m managing accounts vs truly monitoring or doing analytics. I’m a big fan of Hootsuite for seeing all of the accounts we manage at one time and for managing some of the content cycles, but there are far better tools for true social media monitoring and analytics.

@fredericgonzalo covered the list off pretty well. And I’ll say that I spent a day with the Radian6 guys looking under the hood and that is a very impressive tool. We do a lot of work with law enforcement and public sector clients and this is a great tool for them.

  • I have used Hootsuite for awhile now.  Unfortunately, I am seriously considering changing to something else.   The iPad (first gen) and the iPhone (4s) apps constantly seem to crash.  They’ve crashed so much lately that I am about to the point where I don’t even want to use it anymore.

  • @deairby Nutshell mail, now owned by Constant Contact, is more of a basic monitoring service. It sends you emails with social media mentions on a schedule of your choosing. At least that is my understanding. Not sure if it has any analytics or if you can respond through the emails. The service is free.

  • Great thread – two additional ideas

I know it is the ugly stepchild but Bing is great for social here is a post I wrote about it: http://www.gadarian.com/bing-for-social-media-monitoring/.  Give it a shot and I suspect you’ll be very impressed.

Also lately I have been using a “Social CRM” service called Nimble http://www.nimble.com/ - a disclaimer here that I am an authorized solution partner for them – this service is nice if you need/want to monitor your leads rather than your space regarding social.

  • I use Google webmaster. I find Google Analytics and Adsense linking from it make it a lot easier to check out daily, and love the Real Time on Analytics. It also makes it easy to check on activity on my blogs and YouTube when I am pressed for time. Only wish it showed comment activity also…lol. Still hesitant to integrate all of my resources, it would help if I did, but since advertisements already know what I like…and FB know who I know…and G+ know who I should know…well, you know!LOL

  • We use Hootsuite for the posting, monitoring, but I’m extremely frustrated with their reporting system and their need for me to pay MORE money to get the data that I want. I’ve also been using Social Reports but I find their system to be incredibly unstable and drop data. I would love to find one platform that multi-functions well at posting, searching and delivering the data. I heard fairly good things about Sprout Social, but it might be that my expectations are too high and broad for 1 piece of software.

  • @fredericgonzalo I tried your link, but the pdf can not be repaired. Did anyone else have this error?

  • @jasonwiser Hi, I just clicked and it worked fine. Not sure what the problem may be… :-(

  • @fredericgonzalo I will contact them directly. Thanks. I am really interested to read it as we are in the process of investigating CRM solutions.

  • I used Raven – I say used as it kept rejecting my credit card monthly but it was just so good. Credit card stress is not good so I opted out. Raven was SO much better than what I have used elsewhere and it also produced fantastic reports for clients. If they bring in paypal I will be back there like a shot!

Now I use Sprout Social, which is sort of good but due to my addiction to Raven I am still looking for another perfect operator and Sprout Social hasn’t got it for me. I have also tried MarketMe but so far nothing really compares.

I am now going to try Cyfe and I’ll let you know how I get on (keeping Sprout Social in the background :-)

  • I am curious as to any new data here on what is a good alternative to use instead of Hootsuite.

  • Hi All,

I also keep an eye on preferred social media management tools. And have created a list of tools to use…these tools seems to be easy on wallet and give value for money

CRM and Email Marketing Automation: Infusionsoft
    Social Promotional Marketing: Wildfire App
Social Media Monitoring & Content Marketing and Measurement: Beevolve
    Social CRM: Nimble

Please feel free to add to the list.
