Social Media Manager personality (10 posts)

  • Do you think a person‘s personality is key to develop as a good Social Media Manager? Which characteristics do you think can make a person stand out from others in the social media environment?

  • @fernandocortes It’s funny you should ask this, Fernado, as I have been thinking about this exact topic myself.

The short answer to your question is yes, I do think a person’s personality is a key factor in social media.

I think you need to be a genuinely nice person to be good at social media. I also think that you need to be open, honest and altruistic.

The people I really see succeeding with social media for business are really caring, helpful people.

I may have to put some more thought into this. Anyone else? :)

  • The average person is looking online for information and entertainment so @russellallert‘s “caring, helpful people” are going to be sought after in social media (and in person, too). Speaking as a social media manager, I think it’s also important to be consistent, articulate, interesting and interested in others.

  • I agree with the above points but would add that i think it is important that the person understands loves and reflects the industry they are managing the accounts for.

  • @stevencole I’m glad you mentioned those–I guess there may be people out there trying to represent industries they don’t understand.

  • @fernandocortes social media managers should be a good listener, loves to help other people..

  • I think it is important to be yourself and be willing to share “your story”. We all come from a different place and that’s what makes us unique and special. Others can relate and appreciate our openness and honesty.

  • I do think it’s extremely important to be yourself while promoting the brand. I also feel it’s important to talk to the employer/client about what they’re looking for and if it’s OK to express yourself through their message. I’ll usually suggest to give examples of how you might present a message through their social media platforms.

But in the end, a personality is truly important, yes. :)

  • “curious” I would add. Every morning I read the news and try to put myself in my readers shoes: what is there in the behind the barricades that my audience would like to know or is there a different angle to take into consideration in that breaking news that’s allover the blogsphere? not always I succed, but being curious helped me going ahead.

I agree, Francesca. That’s what I will be looking for — a curious, inquiring mind. Someone who knows when and how to ask original, intriguing and engaging questions to propel a conversation forward and keep people begging for more. And of course resourceful, knowledgeable in many varied things, patient, methodical, and more than just helpful, but willing to go the extra mile. Pile on all th technical knowledge they need to know and continuously learn, I think they need to be smart and have an insatiable quest for learning new things. And did I mention energy? An extra supply kept close by is a necessity.

And having all that, a person who truly gets and can embrace the following quote: “In order to appear agreeable in society, one must agree to learn many things they already know.” While the true genius at this job must BE a know-it-all, you cannot let others know you are and do the job well. Ooooh, that’s a provacative statement, I know, but one can still be quite elegant and eloquent without being over the top. A humble, elegant, eloquent servant of exquisite value. That’s it. Now that’s not too much is it, lol?
