Social Media Certifications/Credentials (19 posts)

  • hi all. i was wondering if anyone in the clubs has gone through any social mediia certification programs? I regularly receive email announcements annd invitations to various courses to earn diifferent CRM or Social Media certificates. Many have seemed to be more of a hoax and others just not credible. Has anyone completed a certification that has been helpful?

  • Nope.

I think at this stage any “accreditation” programs would be worthless. Although I am waiting for the Communications (Social Media) degree to be offered at college/university soon (if they haven’t done so already). :)

    Cheers,
    Russ

  • Is there any online respected certification?

  • The eMarketing Association just launched a Certified Social Media Associate (?) program this week. The test is $249 and the prep course is $99. They also offer other certifications.

  • @kc_kreative I received notice about that one as well! I spoke with one of my mentors about that one in particular and he wasn’t sure that it would truly be worth the money. Thank you for sending though, I am still debating it!

  • @alexandrabriggs You’re right that since it’s a new program, there may not be a lot of confidence in it yet. Only time will tell. If you can get onto the LinkedIn group, there have been some discussions about the test already. You can download the topic areas to review what gaps that you might need to fill in (for me that would be Facebook and YouTube!).

    Good luck!

  • @kc_kreative Thank you! I am a member of the group on LinkedIN so I will go in there and read more about it!

  • @alexandrabriggs @russellallert In my opinion, like almost every career in the world, experience is key. Schooling can only tell u so much and in my experiences in school it’s very “in-the-box” thinking. No originality. Which is probably the oppose of what a good SMM should do. Just my two cents. :D

  • Accreditation I think is mostly a waste of money, in my opinion. If you are doing excellent work and people can see that, then you don’t need it. Not in this field any way.

    Cheers!
    Russ

  • I tend to agree with you overall  @russellallert but I am working towards my PMP as I am overlapping my Marketing and Project work and wonder if in the near future we will have a certification or accreditation along the lines of the PMP within the field of Marketing.

  • Sorry, @alexandrabrigg PMP?

  • @russellallert Project Management Professional (http://www.pmi.org/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx)

  • Thanks for the clarification, Alex. :)

  • @alexandrabriggs I think certification is important. Not as important as experience, but still important.  With a certification from a reputable source clients can, at a glance, be assured of your knowledge level. I think the challenge is to find a reputable certification program since we have such a “new” business.

  • Just like anything else, you can be taught and read every article written on the subject, but if haven’t been able to go through trial and error and gain some experience, you won’t be able to fully understand it.

I think it’s extremely hard to teach social media marketing because it’s so new and so unpredictable. Of course there are best practices, but you can find those online (for free). I have sat through several “summits” and classes, yet rarely hear anyone say anything I didn’t already know.

In my opinion, it’s really all about trial and error. One thing may work for one business, but won’t work for another.

Certification may tell potential clients that you know the basics – but that’s about it :)

  • PMP is a certification is an ISO standard – ISO standing for International Organization for Standardization. There’s nothing out there right now for social media. Anyone offering a certification is basically making up the curriculum and then testing you on their made up stuff. A certification typically demonstrates competency in a body of knowledge. Since there is no established body of knowledge that demonstrates competence, and isn’t recognized by a global community, we can take classes and webinars all day and it won’t be considered a certification. Just like Samantha said – even if students did take a certification class, it won’t make them qualified to do anything, just like learning about fashion doesn’t make you a clothing designer.

  • @jesskupferman

Well put Jessica! Hopefully there will eventually be something globally accepted. I like “Alphabet Soup” after my name :)

  • I think Full Sail university offers a major in social media but I doubt that it’s valued in the marketplace as yet.

  • As a Virtual Assistant, we have “Industry Preferred” certs through an online place called VA CLassroom.  The owners are well known in the VA industry and i have certs from there.  I also have the HootSuite Certified Professional Seal.  In my industry and those who know VA Classroom, feel that Craig offers the best training in Internet Marketing and Social Media Marketing.  But it is geared toward VAs helping their clients.
