Social Media Certification (4 posts)

  • With all the people calling themselves social media experts, what is your opinion about having some sort of certification or training of some sort before someone is allowed to call themselves experts?

If so, who should oversee it?

If not, what should be the criteria for being able to use the term, “Social Media Expert”?  Or are there other ways yo differentiate between those who know what they are doing and those who are just Along for the ride with the latest trend?

Or is it too big to try to keep a handle on the problem?  I look forward to seeing your responses.

  • I am and have been a member of several industries that have excellent certification programs.  @journeycreations I would agree that certification can be most helpful in this instance.  However, it may to to early in the creation to do so.  But I would not rule it out in some form or another.  As you mention in different words there are experts and those riding the wave – who can do more damage to a “profession” at this early stage.  interested in hearing what others think.

  • Sorry that i miss spelled @journeycreation in the last post.

  • This topic has come up for me in a few different discussions recently. Although I DO think there should be reliable places where people can go to learn best practices and/or receive training, I don’t think there needs to be a certification. Writers, public relations professionals, lots of marketing jobs have education, but when you graduate from college it’s still a BA in Communications, or a Journalism Degree. There’s no “certified” journalist or “certified” PR person, etc. and I don’t think there needs to be a social media “certification” – we’re not doctors, we’re not life coaches. It’s all about education, I think. Like, degrees. Does that make sense?
